A recent study showed that one in four jobs in Italy involves the employment of migrant workers. The demand is particularly high in the tourism sector, where there are the largest number of vacancies, as well as in construction, where the demand for migrant workers has increased significantly.
According to the EURES report, Italy is experiencing an acute shortage of workers in 37 professions, which underlines the importance of migrant workers for the country’s economy. According to a study conducted by the Union of Chambers of Commerce and the Italian Ministry of Labor, Italian companies plan to sign about 650,000 employment contracts with foreign workers in the first seven months of 2024.
According to statistics, the largest number of migrant workers arrive in Italy from Romania, Albania, Ukraine and Serbia.

Demand for foreign workers in Italy
According to the Italian agency ANSA, 20% of the total number of vacancies concerns the tourism industry. Other vacancies are concentrated in service sectors such as call centers, cleaning, green space maintenance, as well as in the transport and logistics industries.
During the first seven months of 2024, demand for migrant workers in the construction industry increased significantly in Italy. At the same time, the demand for foreign workers in the metallurgical sector has decreased.
In general, the number of vacancies aimed at foreign workers has been growing in recent years. According to InfoMigrants, in 2023, 19.2% of all employee requests were directed to foreigners, which was the highest figure in the last six years.

According to the EURES report for 2023, Italy is facing a significant labor shortage in 37 professions. The main reason for this is the aging of the population, which makes the country increasingly dependent on foreign workers.
Italy is currently experiencing an acute shortage of personnel in the following professions:

4. Healthcare Assistants

According to forecasts, the largest labor shortage in Italy in 2023-2027 will be observed among nurses, physiotherapists and other qualified specialists in the field of health and social services.
It is estimated that 34.3% of the total need for employees will be specialists with higher education, while 48.1% will be specialists with secondary technical education. Due to the aging of the population, Italy will need a significant number of foreign workers.
