Real estate in Dubai is in high demand among foreigners planning to move to the UAE. A country that does not have a slushy off-season and cold weather is comfortable for expats. The Emirates are popular due to the high quality of life and wide business opportunities, while the authorities are loyal to foreigners. Having bought a house or apartments in Dubai, foreigners can easily apply for a residence permit for themselves and their family members. But what if one of them is a pet? Let’s look at the rules of animal transfer to Dubai, as well as the best pet-friendly communities of the city.
How to move to Dubai with a pet
To successfully move to the UAE with a pet, you need a package of documents confirming his health. Documents should be drawn up in strict sequence, taking into account the terms of their validity. Vaccinations are done after chipping, otherwise the vaccination will have to be repeated.
The preparation procedure includes the following steps:
- registration of an international standard vet passport;
- installing the chip;
- vaccination;
- obtaining an import permit – import permit;
- testing for rabies antibodies;
- treatment against parasites;
- obtaining a veterinary certificate of form No. 1.
Vet passport
It can be obtained at any veterinary clinic (private or public). The passport must contain the following information:
- Breed, nickname, gender, age, color of the animal.
- The chip number.
- Vaccination data: date, vaccine manufacturer, batch number.
- The results of tests for the presence of antibodies to rabies.
- Full name of the owner.
Important: only the person whose name is indicated in the passport can transport a cat or dog. There must also be a note that 2 weeks before departure, treatment against parasites was carried out, indicating the drugs used and their dosages.
Chipping
Chipping is carried out at the nearest veterinary clinic providing such a service. For international trips, the Rosselkhoznadzor recommends the use of microchips that meet international ISO standards. The veterinarian enters the chip number into the international Animal-ID database and marks it in the pet’s veterinary passport. Vaccination is allowed after the chip is installed.
Vaccination
Rabies vaccination followed by a 21-day quarantine is mandatory for cats and dogs vaccinated for the first time or after the expiration of the previously supplied vaccine. The animal must be vaccinated no later than one year and no earlier than 3 weeks before the departure date. If the effect of the previous vaccine has not expired yet and it is recorded in the veterinary passport, quarantine is not required.
Rabies vaccination should not be carried out before the chip is installed. If the pet has already been vaccinated this year, but the chipping is done later, you will have to repeat the vaccination in compliance with quarantine.
Comprehensive vaccination against plague, hepatitis, parvovirus enteritis, adenovirus infections and leptospirosis is carried out for dogs. Cats are vaccinated against calicivirosis, rhinotracheitis and panleukopenia.
Other necessary documents
To enter the UAE from Russia and the CIS countries, it is necessary to analyze the level of antibodies to the rabies virus in the blood of an animal no earlier than 30 days after vaccination. If the previous vaccine has not expired yet, the analysis can be done immediately. Testing is allowed only in accredited laboratories, such as VGNKI in Moscow, VNIIZH in Vladimir. The minimum test result is 0.5 IU/ml.
The veterinary certificate of form No. 1 is issued in state veterinary institutions and is valid for 5 days. Immediately before departure, it must be exchanged at the airport for a certificate of form No. 5a, required for return, and a Health Certificate confirming the health of the animal for import. These documents can also be obtained from the Rosselkhoznadzor department.
An animal import permit is issued through the MOCCAE website, it is valid for 30 days and requires payment of a fee of 200 AED ($55) for each pet. Instructions for completing the questionnaire can be found on the Internet. It is important to have a printed document during customs control at the airport.
Which animals should not be imported
The UAE has imposed a ban on the import of the following dog breeds:
- Staffordshire Bull Terrier;
- American Pit Bull Terrier;
- American Staffordshire Terrier;
- Brazilian, Tibetan, Neapolitan, Argentine, Italian, French, Indian, Canarian and Japanese mastiffs;
- Bullmastiff;
- The boxer;
- burbul;
- Rottweiler;
- Doberman pinscher;
- The Great Dane of Canary.
This list includes breeds identified by the authorities as potentially dangerous, and the restriction is aimed at ensuring public peace.
What else do you need to know
Dogs are treated less kindly in the UAE than in many Western countries, as they are traditionally considered unclean animals. There are not enough dog-walking areas, and their stay in parks and beaches is prohibited. Moreover, not every community with apartment buildings or villas in Dubai is allowed to live with pets. However, with the arrival of more foreigners with their pets, the attitude is gradually changing.
Related expenses
Payment of the following duties is provided upon import:
- for a pet import permit: 500 AED ($136) for each cat or dog;
- for a medical examination: 500 AED ($136) for a cat and 1000 AED ($272) for the dog.
You can pay for these services using electronic dirhams, as well as VISA or MASTER card bank cards.
