Almost 20 European countries already issue visas for digital nomads, and this list is constantly being updated. Which countries are these, and how to become a digital nomad in each of these areas? We tell you in our detailed guide.

Albania
Albania has a visa for digital nomads (see visa D for digital mobile workers).
Who can get: foreigners who work remotely on the basis of a contract with a foreign employer or client.
Features: you can take a family, upon arrival, the visa must be converted into an Albanian residence permit.
The validity period of the visa is 1 year, it is possible to extend it for 2 years, and then for 5 years.
Requirements:
- An employment contract with a company or a service agreement with a contractor registered outside the territory of Albania.
- Diplomas, certificates and other documents confirming your qualifications.
- Monthly earnings of €305 per month and availability of funds in an Albanian bank in the amount of 408,000 lek (€3,900).
- A certificate of non-criminal record.
- A housing contract (for at least a year).
- Health insurance (must be valid for at least 1 year).
- The visa application is submitted online. The review takes from 15 to 30 business days.
The cost of a D visa is 80 euros.

Andorra
In Andorra, in December 2022, a visa for digital nomads appeared — Residència per a nòmada digital. In fact, this is a residence permit based on remote work.
Who can get: remote specialists who work on the basis of an agreement with a foreign employer; freelancers who provide services to foreign customers.
Features: you can take a family; the number of visas for nomads is limited by a quota — no more than 50 per year.
Visa validity period: initially 2 years. The first extension is for 2 years; the second is for 3 years; the subsequent ones are for 10 years
Requirements:
- Valid international passport and visa application;
- Monthly income of at least €3,858 (300% of the minimum wage in Andorra for 2023).
- Criminal record certificates from all countries of residence and citizenship;
- The actual photo.
- A positive decision from the Ministry of Economy on the status of a digital nomad.
- Proof of ownership/rental of housing in Andorra.
- Employment contract/contracts with foreign employers/customers.
- Documents on marital status.
- Willingness to live in the country for at least 90 days a year.
- Medical insurance.
All documents must be translated, legalized/apostilled.
The visa can be issued on the spot.
The fee for submitting an application to the migration service will cost about €191.

Hungary
Hungary has a White Card residence permit for digital nomads.
Features: family members will not be able to automatically obtain the same residence permit; you cannot apply for other types of residence permits for the duration of the White Card; upon receipt of a share in a Hungarian company, the White Card is canceled.
Validity period: 1 year with the possibility of a one-time extension for another year.
Requirements:
- Be a citizen of a country outside the EU, the European Economic Area and the Schengen Area (the so-called third country);
- Not to have a stake in a Hungarian company and not to look for a job in Hungary;
- Have a confirmed employment relationship in a country other than Hungary and perform work remotely using digital technologies OR own a stake in a profitable company outside Hungary and manage it remotely;
- Income of at least 3,000 euros per month for the last 6 months;
- Availability of housing in Hungary (lease/ownership agreement);
- Medical insurance or sufficient funds to cover expenses;
- The presence of a valid international passport.
You can submit an application:
- to the Embassy/Consulate of Hungary in the country of residence;
- for countries with visa—free entry – through the online portal Enter Hungary.
Application fee it will be $125, when submitted online — $77. The visa is issued within 21 days. After approval, you can obtain an entry visa for 30 days to enter Hungary. After entering Hungary, you need to come to the local immigration office and get a White Card.

Germany
Germany issues a residence permit for the self-employed (freelancers) under the name “Aufenthaltserlaubnis für Selbständige Tätigkeit”.
Validity period: from 6 months to 3 years (later it will be possible to extend).
Requirements:
- Confirmation of self-employment.
- Stable income.
- Medical insurance.
- The address is in Germany.
- The presence of German clients, namely evidence of intention to cooperate, from at least two potential clients/employers in the form of letters or contracts for payment of services.
- A sufficient pension plan (if the applicant is 45 years old or older); in the future, at 67 years old, you must have either a monthly pension of at least 1503.34 euros for at least 12 years, or assets worth at least 216.481 euros.
You can apply for a visa by making an appointment at the German Embassy. After obtaining a visa and arriving in the country, you will need to apply for a residence permit and provide the required documents. This service will cost you about 100 euros (for Turkish citizens under the age of 24 — 22.80 euros, after 24 years — 37 euros).
The average time for reviewing an application is about 5-6 weeks. It is advisable to sign up for an extension 4-6 weeks before the expiration of the existing residence permit.

Digital Nomad Visa in Asian countries
Greece
The so-called Greece Digital Nomad Visa operates in Greece.
Special Features: If you stay in the country for 180 days or more during a calendar year, you may need to apply for tax residency in Greece (including obtaining a Greek tax number) and pay local taxes.
Validity period: one year, and then you can apply for a residence permit for up to 2 years with an option to extend it for another 2 years.
Requirements:
- Monthly earnings of at least 3,500 euros after taxes (if you are traveling with your spouse, you need to add another 20%, and for each child — 15%).
- You need to work remotely as an employee or self-employed person with customers outside the country.
Important: during this period, you will not have the right to work for a Greek company on a permanent basis or as a freelancer.
You need to apply for a visa at the Greek Consulate in your country of main residence as part of an accelerated procedure. The request can be sent by e-mail or by registered mail. The consulate is obliged to respond within 10 days.
The visa fee is 75 euros.

Iceland
Iceland issues a long-term visa for remote workers for a period of 90 to 180 days.
Features: the holder of such a visa will not be issued an Icelandic identification number; spouses/partners and children (under 18 years old) of a digital nomad can also receive a long-term visa as dependents of a person working remotely.
Validity period: up to 180 days if you apply from your country of residence before arriving in Iceland, or up to 90 days if you apply after entering the Schengen area.
Requirements:
- Be a native of a country outside the EEA/EFTA.
- No need for a visa to enter the Schengen area.
- The absence of a long-term visa to Iceland in the last 12 months.
- Work remotely for a foreign company (excluding Icelandic employers), or as a self-employed person.
- Monthly income of at least 1,000,000 Icelandic kroner (about 6,300 euros) or 1,300,000 kroner (about 8,200 euros) if you apply for your partner/spouse as well.
You need to apply for a visa at the immigration office of Iceland, you can send it by mail (after paying for this service by bank transfer in advance — the fee is 12,200 Icelandic crowns (about 77 euros). Upon arrival in the country, after the application is approved, you must contact the immigration service and obtain a visa. You can fill out the application here.

Spain
The digital nomad visa in Spain has been in force since April 2023. This visa for remote workers was presented within the framework of the Startup Law.
Features: family members (spouse /partner, minor children, dependents) can also get a visa, although this service will cost more.
The validity period of the visa is 1 year. Then you can get a residence permit for 2 years, or there is an option of obtaining a residence permit immediately within the country — for 3 years with an indefinite work contract (or for the specified period of the contract). Then the residence permit can be extended for another 2 years.
Requirements:
- You need to work remotely in companies outside Spain, or be self—employed, provided that working for a Spanish company does not exceed 20% of their total professional activity; proof of financial means (at least 200% of the minimum wage in Spain – at the moment it is €2,520 per month).
- Relevant education or work experience of at least 3 years;
- For family members — documents confirming kinship.
You can apply directly for a visa at the Spanish embassies; in the case of a residence permit, it can be issued inside Spain itself, automatically skipping the visa stage.
Application processing time: 10 days, more may be obtained if additional documents are requested.
The cost of the visa is paid according to the rates of consular fees, at the moment it is about 630 euros for the main applicant and 525 euros for each family member. However, the amount may vary due to fluctuations in the exchange rate.

Italy
After 2 years of discussions, Italy signed a decree on the launch of a visa for digital nomads, which will be identical to a residence permit. This visa can be obtained by foreigners from non-EU countries who perform highly qualified remote work using advanced technologies.
Features: the visa opens the way to permanent residence after 5 years of residence on this visa; family members can come for family reunification (spouse, children under 18, parents — under certain conditions).
The validity period of the visa is 1 year and can be extended if the conditions (work, income, insurance, housing) are maintained
Requirements:
- Annual income of at least 28,000 euros.
- Medical insurance valid in Italy.
- Confirmed permanent residence in Italy.
- At least 6 months of remote work experience.
- Confirmation from the employer about the remote work.
- No criminal record.
The visa application is submitted after entering Italy at the local police station.

Cyprus
The Cyprus digital Nomad visa has been valid since 2021. It is also a temporary residence permit. Initially, a quota of 100 visas was set, but in March 2022 it was increased to 500 visas.
Peculiarities:
- Family members of the digital nomad (spouse/civil partner and minor children) can also obtain a temporary residence permit for the same period, but without the right to work or engage in economic activity in Cyprus.
- If a digital nomad resides in Cyprus for more than 183 days during the tax year and is not a tax resident of another country, he is considered a tax resident of Cyprus.
The validity period of the visa is 1 year (it will be possible to extend it for a maximum of 2 more years). Applications for extension must be submitted no later than one month before the expiration of the current residence permit.
Requirements:
- Be a citizen of a country outside the EU or EEA.
- Be an employee of a company registered outside Cyprus, or a self-employed person providing services to clients abroad.
- Availability of insurance.
- Income from €3,500 per month after taxes and fees;
- No criminal record.
- Booked accommodation.
You can apply for a visa within 3 months after arrival at the office of the Department of Civil Registration and Migration in Nicosia. It is required to provide officially translated and certified documents.
The application will be considered for 5-7 weeks. If approved, the applicant will receive a letter with instructions on obtaining a residence permit, in case of refusal — a letter explaining the reasons.
Payment for obtaining or extending a residence permit It is 70 euros. At the initial registration, 70 euros are also charged for registration in the register of foreigners.

Digital Nomad Visa in Africa
Latvia
The digital visa of the nomad of Latvia was introduced in 2022, although this has been discussed since 2020.
Special features: holders of this visa do not have the right to work directly in Latvia; family members cannot apply for this visa together with the applicant.
The validity period of the visa is 1 year.
Requirements:
- Be an employee employed by an employer from an OECD member country*, or a self-employed person registered in one of these countries.
- Be able to perform work remotely during your stay in Latvia.
- If an employee is an employee, provide a certificate from the employer of at least 6 months of work and income of at least €3,433 per month.
- If self—employed, confirm an income of at least €3,433 per month for the last six months.
- Availability of medical insurance valid in Latvia and Schengen, with coverage of at least 42,600 euros.
- Confirmation of the place of residence in Latvia.
The application for a visa is submitted in Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs of Latvia.
The cost of the visa: only the state fee is paid (within 10 euros).

It consists of 38 countries: Austria, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, the United Kingdom and the United States.
Malta
In Malta, the Nomad Residence Permit program is called Nomad Residence Permit.
Peculiarities:
- You can come from both EU countries and countries outside the Union (at the moment the program is not available for Russians and Belarusians).
- You can apply for the program together with family members.
- There is no need to pay income tax as a digital nomad (taxes will only need to be paid if you are self-employed and offer services to Maltese companies).
The validity period of the visa is one year with the possibility of extension up to 4 years. Also, all this time you will be able to move freely around the Schengen area.
When applying for an extension, you must provide a bank statement in Malta confirming your stay of at least 5 months for the previous 12 months.
Requirements:
- Starting from April 1, it is necessary to confirm a minimum annual income of 42,000 euros (before that it was 32,400 euros).
- The job/business must be outside Malta.
- A valid passport, a lease/purchase agreement in Malta for the entire period of the permit, and medical insurance are required.
Apply for a visa it is possible online by email (address — nomad.residencymalta@gov.mt ). You can fill out the application here. After approval, you will need to pay a non-refundable fee of 300 euros. Then you will be issued an entry visa (if required), and upon arrival in Malta, a resident card (you will need to pay 27.50 euros for its issuance upon receipt).
Processing of the application takes about 60 working days after payment of the fee.

Netherlands
The Netherlands has a residence permit for self-employed workers in priority sectors of the economy.
Features: it is possible to move with your family
Validity period: a maximum of 2 years.
Requirements:
- Registration in The Commercial Register of the Chamber of Commerce of the Netherlands (Kamer van Koophandel).
- Availability of all necessary permits/licenses for work.
- Proof that the activity is of significant interest to the economy (assessed according to the scoring system).
- For freelancers, the availability of one or more orders/contracts in the Netherlands.
- For employees of the field of individual health care — registration in the relevant BIG-register registry.
- Sufficient income (at least 1564 euros per month).
- Availability of a business plan.
The visa application is submitted at the Embassy/Consulate of the Netherlands abroad.
Application processing time: up to 90 days, can be extended up to 6 months.
Cost: the application will cost 380 euros.

Norway
Norway has a visa for self-employed workers (see “Self-employed persons with a company abroad”).
Features: does not give the right to permanent residence; residence is allowed for a spouse / partner and children with a contract of more than 6 months.
The validity period of the visa: a maximum of 6 years in one period. After 6 years, you must leave Norway for 2 years before submitting a new application.
Requirements:
- Have a work contract with a registered Norwegian company.
- Be registered as an individual entrepreneur abroad (not an LLC).
- Relevant qualifications (at least 3 years of professional education, university degree or 6+ years of work experience).
- The level of payment is not lower than the standards for this profession in Norway: if the job requires a bachelor’s degree, the minimum annual salary before tax should be at least 448,900 Norwegian kroner (approximately 38,978 euros); if a master’s degree — at least 480,900 Norwegian kroner (about 41,756). For jobs that do not require higher education, the salary must correspond to the level set by collective agreements in the industry, if any.
The visa application is submitted at the Norwegian Embassy or visa application center.
Application processing time: up to 2 months after submission of documents.
Visa cost: NOK 6,300 (about 550 euros) + possible fees of visa centers.

Portugal
The digital nomad visa of Portugal was launched on October 30, 2022 — it is officially positioned as a “resident visa for professional activities provided remotely outside the national territory.”
Peculiarities:
- The new visa is an alternative to the existing “D7” visa, which is intended for pensioners and those who receive “passive income”.
- All those who work remotely as an employee or an independent specialist and arrive in Russia can apply for a visa Portugal is NOT one of the countries The EU or the European Economic Area.
- The main applicant can submit documents together with his family members as accompanying persons. Alternatively, after the main applicant receives a residence permit in In Portugal, his family members can subsequently apply for family reunification separately.
The validity period of the visa: since we are talking about residency, the minimum period is 1 year with the possibility of further extension.
Requirements:
- For employees: provide an employment contract or a declaration from the employer confirming the employment relationship.
- For independent specialists: provide the company’s founding agreement, a service agreement, or a document confirming the provision of services to one or more clients.
- Proof of the average monthly income for the last 3 months of at least the equivalent of 4 minimum monthly salaries in Portugal (in 2024, it amounts to 820 euros before taxes).
- A document confirming tax residency.
- A complete set of standard documents for a visa (application form, photo, passport, insurance, etc.).
You can apply for a visa at the Portuguese Consulate in your country or at the Portuguese Immigration agency Serviço de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras (SEF).

Romania
Romania introduced its visa for digital nomads with amendments to Law No. 22 of January 14, 2022.
The validity period of the visa: for 6 months or 1 year. As specified in the official document, the first extension of a temporary residence permit for this category is granted for 6 months.
Requirements:
- Have an income of at least 3 average Romanian salaries (about 3,700 euros) in the last 6 months from remote work for a company registered outside Romania or from the activities of your own company abroad.
- Provide an employment contract with a foreign company or proof of ownership/management of a foreign company for at least 3 years.
- Provide documents confirming the payment of taxes abroad.
- Have health insurance worth at least 30,000 euros.
- Provide a certificate of non-criminal record.
- Confirm the funds for accommodation.

Digital Nomad Visa in America and the Caribbean
Croatia
Croatia launched a residence permit program for digital nomads on January 1, 2021.
Who can get: freelancers and remote specialists working for a foreign employer or for their company outside Croatia.
Peculiarities:you do not have to pay income tax during the first year; you can take your family with you: spouses, children under 18, elderly parents or partners living together for 3 years or more.
The validity period of the visa is up to 1 year, you can apply for a new one only six months after the end of the previous one.
Requirements:
- monthly income of at least 2,539.31 euros (or 30,471.72 euros in a bank account for the year);
- completed application;
- proof that you are not working for Croatia;
- a copy of the passport;
- certificate of non-criminal record;
- medical insurance;
- address in Croatia (can be temporary);
- for a spouse — a marriage certificate, for children — a birth certificate.
Submitting an application: 1) at the nearest Croatian consulate in your home country, 2) at a police station in Croatia itself, 3) online.
Cost: from 134 euros for a visa and registration.
Processing of the application usually takes about a month. If your candidacy is approved, you can fly to Croatia, register with the police and — after 3 weeks — collect a biometric residence card.

* Croatia joined the Schengen area on January 1, 2023, which allows digital nomads to travel across Europe without a visa for 90 days.
Montenegro
Nomads who want to stay in Montenegro have two options: apply for a national D visa or a residence permit for digital nomads. This follows from the “Law on Foreigners” in this country.
Peculiarities:
- You cannot work for local companies and clients.
- You do not need to pay income tax while you are in the status of a digital nomad.
- The spouse and children of the main applicant can go through the reunification process and also stay in the country.
The validity period of the visa:
If we are talking about a national D visa, then up to 180 days a year; when applying for a residence permit — up to 2 years with the possibility to extend the document again for 2 years. After these 4 years of staying in the country with nomad status, you will need to leave for at least six months.
Requirements:
- The possibility of obtaining a D visa or the right of visa-free entry to Montenegro.
- Confirmation that you work remotely for a company registered outside Montenegro (contract, work certificate).
- The minimum income is 1,350 euros per month for the last year. When reuniting a family, add 310 euros to this amount for each family member.
- Availability of long-term housing in Montenegro.
- Medical insurance for at least a month.
- A certificate of non-criminal record.
- Confirmation of payment of contributions to the pension fund and the health care system at the place of work.
You can apply for a visa in person inside Montenegro at the police department of Internal Affairs of a particular city.
Application processing time: no more than 40 days after submission.

Czech
Recently, a digital nomads program was launched in the Czech Republic. But as it turned out, not everyone can get a Czech digital nomad visa.
Validity period: for a maximum of 1 year for both employees of foreign companies and freelancers.
Requirements:
Citizenship of one of the following countries: Australia, Japan, Canada, Republic of Korea, New Zealand, United Kingdom, USA or Taiwan.
For employees of foreign companies:
- Work for a foreign company with at least 50 employees worldwide.
- The possibility of remote work via telecommunication means must be specified in the employment contract or confirmed by a written statement from the employer.
- Have an appropriate education (university or higher professional education in the field of natural sciences, engineering, technology or mathematics — STEM) or at least 3 years of experience in the IT field.
- Prove an income of at least 1.5 times the average annual gross salary announced by the Czech Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs (about 30,264 euros per year or 2,522 euros per month).
For freelancers (self-employed):
- Register a free enterprise (obtain a license) in the field of IT in the Czech Republic.
- Have an appropriate education or at least 3 years of experience in the IT field.
- Prove an expected income of at least 1.5 times the average annual gross salary in the Czech Republic.
The visa application is submitted at the relevant Czech embassy/consulate abroad at the place of permanent residence of the applicant.
Application processing time: within 45 days from the date of submission of the full set of documents and requirements.

There is also a 2nd option
The Czech Republic also has a long-term visa for entrepreneurs and the self-employed, which can be obtained by citizens of non-EU countries, as well as non-EU Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland*.
Visa validity period: up to one year with the possibility of extending or changing the status of a residence permit.
Requirements:
- Provide a trade license* or other document confirming the purpose of stay (individual entrepreneurship, extract from the register of companies, etc.).
- Confirm the availability of funds for living in the country.
- Booking accommodation for up to 1 year.
- A certificate of non-criminal record.
- After entry, you must take out medical insurance.
Important: documents must be translated into Czech, and foreign documents must be legalized.
You can apply for a freelancer visa at the Czech Embassy in your country.
Review period: usually 90-120 days.
*A trade license is a document that confirms your right to conduct your own business in the Czech Republic. The main conditions for obtaining are reaching the age of 18 and no criminal record; sometimes it is necessary to confirm education and/or work experience.
*Recruitment of Belarusians and Russians for economic migration programs in the Czech Republic is currently suspended.
Estonia
The Digital Nomad Visa program operates in Estonia. Applications for this visa were accepted on August 1, 2020.
Peculiarities:
- This is not a residence permit, but only the right to temporary stay in Estonia;
- If your stay exceeds 183 days for 12 consecutive months, you will receive tax resident status and will have to pay local taxes.
- Family members (spouse/partner, minor children) can apply for accompanying visas.
- A visa does not provide advantages for obtaining a residence permit in the future.
- With this visa, you can also work for an Estonian company, but the main purpose of staying in The remote work indicated in the application must remain in Estonia. That is, working for an Estonian company may be an additional, but not the main activity during your stay on a digital nomad visa.
The validity period of the visa:up to one year with the possibility to submit a new application for the next period of up to 6 months. The maximum continuous period of stay is 1.5 years.
Requirements:
- Citizenship of one of the countries not included in the restrictive list (this includes, among others, Russia and Belarus).
- The presence of one of the statuses: an employee of a foreign company, a partner/shareholder of a foreign company or a freelancer providing services mainly to foreign clients.
- The confirmed legal income for the last 6 months is at least 4,500 euros per month.

It is worth saying that Estonia also offers “e-residency”: This allows remote workers to gain digital access to electronic services in Estonia (without providing a place of residence). This will be useful if you want to set up a company in Estonia and manage it online; you will also have access to banking services and will be able to remotely declare taxes in the country.
