In Spain, ocupas will have 24 hours to leave the house

The Senate in Spain has approved a bill aimed at combating payouts. If the Congress of Deputies (lower house) adopts the reform, the following changes await the home invaders:

  • After receiving the notification, they will be given only 24 hours to leave someone else’s apartment or house. If they refuse, the Okupas will be forcibly evicted.
  • They will be banned from registering at the address of the property they have illegally occupied.
  • In court, the right to stay will be proved by the “invader”, not the owner.
  • Penalties will be expanded for payoffs and prison terms will be increased.
  • Urgent court sessions will be held to resolve disputes quickly.
