Emergency on the Northern Railway

Train on Northern Railway in Russia.

ЧП на Северной железной дороге

On the evening of June 26, nine cars of the Vorkuta – Novorossiysk passenger train No. 511 derailed on the Inta–1 – Ugolny (Komi Republic) section of the Northern Railway due to the erosion of the railway track due to heavy rains.

In total, the train consisted of 14 wagons and 232 passengers and a train crew. Three people were killed (two male shift workers and a 16-year-old girl), about 70 needed medical attention. A criminal case has been opened under Part 1 of Article 263 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation “Violation of traffic safety and operation of railway transport”.

It should be noted that one of the stops of the Vorkuta – Novorossiysk train is the Tunnelnaya station, which is located 36 km from Anapa, and most of the train passengers follow it to this station in order to further head to Anapa. According to tour operators (TO), there were no organized groups of children traveling to the sea on the train. The relatives of the victims will receive an insurance payment in the amount of 2 million 25 thousand rubles. In addition, the management of Russian Railways decided to transfer an additional 2 million rubles from the company to the relatives of the victims, 1 million rubles to the hospitalized victims, and 500 thousand rubles to the rest of the victims. All passengers will be reimbursed for the full fare and 20 thousand points will be awarded under the Russian Railways Bonus program.

On June 28, at 3:42 Moscow time, train traffic on the Inta-1 – Ugolny section of the Northern Railway was fully restored. An embankment was erected at the scene of the emergency, 200 meters of new rail grating were laid, the path was leveled with special equipment.

Crimea and Dagestan

According to ATOR, about 300 thousand tourists (organized and unorganized) are currently vacationing in Crimea, about 20 thousand in Sevastopol. Last Monday, June 26, tour operators recorded no more than 1% of cancellations due to the terrorist attack of tours to Sevastopol and Crimea with arrivals this week. By Friday, no more than 3% of trips for the upcoming dates had been canceled. Sales of new tours to the peninsula decreased by about 20%. Demand has “sunk” a little, but, according to the expert, this will not affect the results of the season in Crimea, since the beginning of the year, a record increase in tourist traffic has been recorded in the republic at the level of 40% compared to last year. Tour operators assume that sales of tours to Crimea will recover in early July, and at the end of the season there will be an increase of not 40%, but a maximum of 35%.

The governor of Sevastopol Mikhail Razvozhaev

He said that all the beaches of Sevastopol will remain open, but residents and guests of the city are not recommended to visit the beaches on the North side – they are declared extremely dangerous. He also said that in 40 days about 600 capital facilities will be installed in the city to shelter people in case of an air raid. 300 of them will be installed at public transport stops, another 300 in parks, squares and beaches. First aid stations will have to appear in all parks and beaches. Another innovation is that in case of an alarm, passengers will no longer be dropped off from public transport – people will stay in the cabin of buses and trolleybuses.

There is no mass cancellation of tours and after the terrorist attacks committed in Dagestan, none of the vacationers left ahead of schedule, according to the press service of the Ministry of Tourism of the republic.

There may be 15-20 thousand tourists in Dagestan, of which about 5 thousand are organized. Tour operators note that there are more cancellations of tours to Dagestan, sales have decreased. But this decrease will not significantly affect the good results for the entire season.

To drink or not to drink

The objections of the Ministry of Internal Affairs to the proposal of the Ministry of Finance to allow duty free shops to sell alcohol in halls located in the waiting areas for domestic flights and baggage claim, led to the fact that such shops will open only at Sheremetyevo, Vnukovo and Domodedovo airports. Recall that the Ministry of Internal Affairs insists that alcohol sales in duty free stores can only be organized in the arrival area. And only three airports in the capital have free spaces in the arrival area where such establishments can be placed.

Sanctions news

Tour operators believe that due to sanctions against the Moscow Exchange, tours abroad will rise in price by 2-3%, but organized tourists will not notice this while the trend of strengthening the ruble persists.

The EU has included in the new, 14th package of sanctions the airline Ural Airlines (provides logistical support to the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation) and the airport holding Novaport (the airports of the holding are used by Russian military aviation).

However, the travel community does not expect any global changes in the work of the airline and the airport, since the entire Russian aviation business has been operating under sanctions for two years and has already adapted to these conditions in general. The ban on charter flights for Russians in and over the EU introduced in the same 14th package has nothing to do with mass tourism.

But there is also relatively good news. According to the newspaper “Vestnik ATOR”, shops and shops with all kinds of consumer goods (clothes, shoes, bed linen, dishes, souvenirs, etc.), pharmacies and even beauty salons in Kemer (Antalya) have adapted to Russian tourists. In many retail outlets near hotels, you can pay by online transfer to the seller’s phone number linked to a ruble account in a Russian bank. The current exchange rate is 100 rubles for 1 dollar/euro.

Trends

One of the domestic travel planning services analyzed data on hotel bookings in popular cities of Russia and abroad in the period from January to June and told where its customers vacationed in the first half of 2024. St. Petersburg took the second place, with 14% of tourists staying in its hotels in the first half of 2024, which is 11% less than in 2023. Adler closes the top three with a share of 4%; Russians also rested less often here this year, the number of orders decreased by 7%. Compared to the first half of 2023, the interest of Russian travelers increased to rest in hotels in Kaliningrad and Krasnodar – by 16%, and 9% more often booked accommodation in Nizhny Novgorod. But in Esto-Sadka, they rested 19% less often.

Istanbul became the most popular foreign city in the first half of the year: 9% of the total number of hotel bookings were made there, but 9% less people rested in the Turkish city than last year. Dubai came in second place (5%); demand for hotels there decreased by 10% over the year. Minsk took the third place in the rating with a share of 4%. The capital of Belarus attracted 2.5% more Russians this year. In addition, Yerevan, Paris, Tbilisi, Bangkok, Rome, Shanghai and Milan entered the top 10. Shanghai showed the most noticeable increase in demand: hotels in this Chinese city were booked 1.5 times more often. Russian tourists‘ interest in holidays in Tbilisi has also increased (+47%), Paris (+14%) and Milan (+7%). Noticeably fewer travelers traveled to Yerevan (the share of hotel bookings in the city fell by 27%) and Bangkok (-19%).
