For Turkish citizens and those visiting St. Sophia for the purpose of performing divine services, entrance to the cathedral remains free.
In July 2020, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan signed a decree according to which Hagia Sophia became a mosque and religious services resumed there. Visiting the mosque then became free.
