It became known how Russians get to Bulgaria after its entry into the Schengen area

Стало известно, как россиянам попадать в Болгарию после её вступления в Шенген

Tour operators for ATOR explained how Russians can get to Bulgaria after its entry into the Schengen area. It should be noted that the deadlines are close — already on March 31, Bulgaria and Romania should be partially annexed to the Schengen area and, in particular, border controls for air or sea routes between Bulgaria, Romania and other countries of the Schengen area will be discontinued, although control will remain at the land borders.

But for Russians who want to go to a once popular, and now fundamentally anti-Russian, country, it is more significant that, according to expectations, starting from April 1, Bulgaria and Romania will begin issuing single type C Schengen visas instead of national visas. To receive Schengen, Russian citizens will have to submit biometrics, and they will be able to stay there for a maximum of 90 days during any 180-day period.

Especially for holders of a Bulgarian residence permit, ATOR clarified that although national visas issued by Romania and Bulgaria before March 31, 2024 do not give the right to travel to other countries of the Schengen area, residence permits and long-term D visas issued before the specified date imply free movement in the countries of the Schengen area as long as these the permissions are valid. This information was confirmed at the Embassy of the Republic of Bulgaria in Moscow. After April 1, all previously issued long–term type D visas and residence permits in Bulgaria will provide their holders with the opportunity to travel to the Schengen countries within the specified period of stay – for example, up to 90 days within a 180–day period,” they said.

At the same time, the diplomatic mission announced its readiness to begin issuing Schengen visas in Russia in April, without specifying the terms of issuance, however. “All Schengen-type visas that will be issued by Bulgarian consulates abroad must be coordinated with all countries of the Schengen area. It is still difficult to answer how long this procedure will be,” the Bulgarians said. So far, according to the embassy statement, “consultations and testing of the system are underway.”
