Russians save on vacations

VTsIOM: A third of Russians did not take a vacation in the summer of 2024

Россияне экономят на отпусках

The latest published statistics are disappointing – more and more Russians are trying to save money on a well-deserved vacation.

Romir Research Holding cites the following data: Russians want to save the most on traveling abroad (26%), on luxury goods (21-23%) and on entertainment (11-13%). And according to the All-Russian Center for the Study of Public Opinion (VTsIOM), a third of Russians did not take a vacation this summer (33%, +13% in two years), one in five vacationed in the country and at home (22% and 21%, respectively). The high rate of workaholics who go without vacation lasts for the second consecutive season (in 2023 – 35%). For comparison, from 2018 to 2022, the share of those who refused to rest in favor of work was about 20%. They refused to rest in 2024. 39% of men and 28% of women. Moreover, these are mainly people aged 25 to 34 years (37%).

Every seventh person this summer vacationed in another city or village in Russia (14%), 8% – in the resorts of the Krasnodar Territory (Sochi, Anapa, Tuapse, etc.), 4% – abroad, 3% – in the Crimea. The average duration of summer holidays in 2024 has been reduced to 20 days. In 2020 it was 33 days, in 2021 – 31, in 2022 – 30, in 2023 – 22 days. At the same time, spending on holidays has doubled in recent years: if in 2018-2022. they ranged from 33 to 40 thousand rubles per person, then this year they amounted to 67 thousand rubles. Thus, this summer’s vacation turned out to be the shortest and most expensive for the entire observation period, VTSIOM experts noted.

Mostly Russians went on vacation by car (53%), train (30%) or plane (26%), stayed in hotels (33%), with relatives or friends (25%), rented housing (20%). According to the majority (45%) of Russians, the conditions for recreation and leisure in Russia have changed for the better over the past year.

Nevertheless, over the summer, about 140 thousand Russian organized tourists visited Europe, said Dmitry Gorin, Vice President of the Russian Union of Tourism Industry (PCT). He recalled that 17 countries continue to issue Schengen visas to Russians, 50% of them are reusable visas. The failure rate is 10% (in previous years it was 1.5%). In total, over 600 thousand Schengen visas have been issued over the past 12 months, plus many tourists have long-term visas for several years, but there are no figures for summer trips of independent travelers yet.

The highest flow of Russian organized tourists to France, Italy, Spain and Greece is expected. These countries are the most willing to issue visas. For example, Spain has dramatically increased the number of visas for six months and a year in recent months, an increase of several times. Finland, Germany and the Czech Republic, which were popular among Russians in the previous year, completely disappeared from the travel statistics of Russian citizens.

According to PCT President Ilya Umansky, the most expensive tour in 2024 was bought for 28 million rubles. This amount was spent by a family of five people on a month-long vacation in Kemer using the all inclusive system. For comparison, last year the most expensive tour was for 24.5 million rubles, and it was Antalya. The family is bigger, but there are also more days – 67.

Earthquakes on Sheregesh

On the night of September 20, a powerful earthquake was recorded in the area of the Sheregesh ski resort. Locals and tourists felt three strong tremors. “The epicenter was located 4 km east of the village of Sheregesh. According to preliminary data, there are no injuries or damage. Life support facilities are operating normally,” the press service of the Ministry of Emergency Situations reported.

However, judging by the video footage from social networks, there is still destruction. Local residents show that tiles have fallen off in many apartments, furniture has fallen in, and cracks have appeared in some places on the houses. This result is quite predictable, according to the summary of the Altai-Sayan branch of the Unified Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the magnitude of the earthquake was 4.6 points.

In addition, a giant earthen funnel has spread out in the center of Old Sheregesh. It was formed during the previous tremors, which were recorded in the area of the ski resort on September 10. Now the sinkhole has grown in size, and the soil around it continues to crumble.

Rospotrebnadzor is on guard

In India, a man died from the Nipah virus, and doctors took the people who came into contact with him under observation. WHO considers this virus to be one of the most dangerous, since no drugs have been created for it yet, and the probability of death is high.

Rospotrebnadzor employees monitor the surveillance situation in India. And in order to prevent the import of a dangerous infection into Russia, the department has already created specific tests for the virus. Perhaps tourists arriving from India will be checked.

To work on vacation

As a result of a joint study of a Russian educational platform and a domestic travel service, it became known that only 26% of Russians do not work at all during their holidays, and the remaining three quarters of Russian citizens somehow return to work tasks during their holidays. At the same time, a laptop is a mandatory attribute for vacations for only 16% of respondents, and the absolute majority of respondents (54%) said that they do not take a laptop on vacation, since it is not a place for a working device.

One in four respondents (23%) checks emails and work chats, slightly less than half of compatriots (44%) respond to urgent work requests if necessary. 7% of the respondents continue to work daily, despite their vacation status. At the same time, only one in five Russians admits that they would like to increase the duration of their annual vacation. Despite the fact that most of the respondents are more satisfied with the length of their vacation, 50% of respondents will envy a colleague who will fly to the Maldives for a vacation. The other half will be happy for him and his journey.

Visa News

The European Commission intends to check how EU countries comply with previously imposed restrictions on the issuance of visas for Russians in order to decide on new measures. “We have suspended the simplified visa regime with the Russian Federation, we have prepared instructions for EU member states on stricter rules for issuing visas, additional checks for Russian citizens at EU borders. The number of visas for Russian citizens has fallen by about 90%. We are currently studying how the member states implement these instructions in order to understand whether we need to take new measures,” said European Commissioner Stella Kyriakides.

Meanwhile, the launch of the Entry System/Exit (Entry/Exit System, EES) to the EU may be postponed again. Initially, the system was supposed to be launched last summer, then the launch of EES was postponed to October 6 this year, but then postponed again until November 10. And last week, France, Germany and the Netherlands warned Brussels that they would not be ready for this date. In these three countries, they expressed concern about the lack of EES testing in the “field” and reported the risks of possible queues at the borders.

The elements raged

The Republic of South Africa was suddenly covered by a powerful snowfall, paralyzing traffic on the roads. It lasted about 10 hours. Snow covered the streets, and traffic literally stopped on the roads. The disaster caused a nationwide disaster. In some areas, snowdrifts reach two meters.

Strong winds and rains that hit Central and Eastern Europe and have already claimed the lives of 24 people hit the Italian regions of Emilia-Romagna and Marche on Wednesday, as a result of which some cities were under water. Two people are missing and about 1,000 people have been evacuated from their homes.

Shanghai was hit by a typhoon, the strongest in the last 75 years. Residents were urged not to take to the streets. More than 400 thousand citizens were evacuated from homes in the path of Hurricane Bebinka.

They have a tour tax

The new Minister of Tourism of Thailand, Sorawong Thienthong, who took office on September 16, plans to introduce a tourist fee of 300 baht (about 800 rubles) postponed by the previous administration from 2025. The issue of introducing a fee has been raised every year since 2013. The last time it was going to be introduced on January 1, 2024, but in December 2023, the decision was once again postponed. In June of this year, Prime Minister Sretta Tavisin announced the rejection of the introduction of a tourist tax.

And in Toledo, Spain, they decided not to bother with the introduction of a tourist tax, but simply to charge tour operators for “loading and unloading” their tourists in the city. The amount will vary from 1 to 1.50 euros per tourist, depending on the capacity of the vehicle in which guests arrive in Toledo as part of a day trip. The innovation will come into force in 2025.
