Non–standard problems have been added to the standard problems of summer – heat, fires, droughts, water and electricity outages – over the past week.
For example, a glitch in the artificial intelligence of a cybersecurity company led to a massive collapse of air travel. But we’ll start with the prices. As Vladimir Poteshkin, Deputy Minister of Transport of the Russian Federation, said at a meeting on measures to increase the availability of air transportation, the increase in the cost of air tickets in Russia in June amounted to 9%: “This year there is indeed an increase in prices. In January – by 14%, in February – by 18%, in March – by 22%, in April – by 11%, in May and June – by 9%.” According to the Russian Union of Travel Industry (PCT), prices for flights to Sochi have increased especially noticeably. The “minimum” rise in price compared to last year was recorded for tickets from Syktyvkar – “only” by 21%, from Cheboksary – by 22%, from Tyumen – by 23%, from Perm – by 27%. “Moderate” growth in ticket prices from Nizhnekamsk – by 30%, from Ufa – by 33%, from St. Petersburg – by 38%, from Moscow – by 41%, from Yekaterinburg – by 47%, from Samara – by 49%. The most significant increase was recorded on flights from Kazan – by 53%.
In Crimea, at the Kalamitsky Breeze health camp, 26 children were hospitalized with an acute intestinal infection. The reason is norovirus. Rospotrebnadzor found sanitary violations in the camp during the organization of nutrition, drinking regime, disinfection. In the Krasnodar Territory, the heat reaches +40 degrees and above, and at the same time, power outages occur due to network overload and lack of capacity.
On the morning of July 15 and 16, a serious queue of cars was observed at the entrance to the Crimean Bridge – about 1,4 thousand cars. The waiting time from Tamani was more than three hours, in the opposite direction – about an hour.
Seventeen tourists were injured during a fire on a pleasure yacht in Marmaris. There were 96 passengers and 6 crew members on board. Some of the vacationers jumped into the water, the rest were taken by the crews of neighboring yachts and coast guard vessels. 14 tourists have minor injuries, three more are in serious condition in hospitals.
Microsoft’s global technical glitch has disrupted airports and airlines around the world. The crash was caused by CrowdStrike antivirus – its update came into conflict with the Windows system and caused its collapse. Operating systems began to massively issue the “blue screen of death” (BSoD) – because of this, the work of not only airports and airlines, but also many news agencies, emergency services, and banks stopped.
Airports in the USA, Australia, Germany, Turkey, Spain, Great Britain, and the Netherlands were disrupted. Some airlines around the world have suspended flights due to communication problems. More than 2,200 flights in the world have been canceled, almost 24 thousand have been delayed amid a global disruption. Most of the cancellations occurred in the United States. But in Russia, there were no problems with the operation of airports, websites and airlines.
A heat wave of up to 43 degrees Celsius forced the Greek authorities to close the Acropolis to visitors from noon to 17:00. Italy has declared the highest level of danger due to the heat, four people were killed. Spain and Romania are also experiencing heat with temperatures up to 44 degrees. Due to the heat and wind, forest fires started in Albania and Northern Macedonia. One of the fires covered almost 30 kilometers of territory. Istanbul authorities have issued a heat warning, saying that by July 28, temperatures will rise 3-6 degrees above normal.
On July 18, an Air India Boeing 777 made an emergency landing at the Yemelyanovo airfield. The reason is the triggering of a fire indication in the cargo compartment of the liner. A backup flight arrived for the passengers the next day. All this time they were in the sterile area of the airport, as there are no visas. They had to spend the night on the floor, they had access to duty-free shops, but foreign bank cards do not work in Russia. It was possible to pay in cash in foreign currency, but the change in foreign currency quickly ended, so rubles were used. This is the second Air India Delhi – San Francisco flight that has been forced to land in Russia since last summer. June 6, 2023 The Boeing 777 made an emergency landing in Magadan due to an engine malfunction. Then the passengers continued their journey on a backup liner after a 39‑hour wait.

Excessive tourism
Amsterdam City Council has voted to phase out cruise ships, setting a goal to completely close the Amsterdam cruise terminal by 2035. By 2026, the number of cruise ships moored at the terminal will be reduced by almost half – from the current 190 to 100. This will reduce environmental pollution from the ship’s oil generators and control the flow of tourists not only in Amsterdam, but also throughout the Netherlands.
In addition, cruise ships will be prohibited from mooring in the city center, and it is planned to completely ban their entry into Amsterdam.
Venice intends to double the entrance tax rate for day tourists in 2025 from the current 5 to 10 euros. According to the city councilor Simone Venturini, in charge of tourism, the experimental payment system for day-trip tourists, which came into force in April this year and lasted 29 days, had a limited impact on the incoming flow. Therefore, additional measures should be taken in this direction in order to further reduce the number of people wishing to come to the city without spending the night on weekends and holidays. During the first 11 days of the test period in Venice, about 1 million euros were collected from day tourists. The authorities confirmed that after analyzing the experimental data, the improved paid entry system for those visitors who do not stay in Venice overnight will be resumed in 2025, and the fee may double to 10 euros.
