Kamchatka’s Three Volcanoes Park has received a Green Zoom certificate

Kamchatka Park with three volcanoes receives Green Zoom certification.

On July 18, the project of the year-round resort “Sopka Goryaya”, the central link of a large-scale investment project to create a tourist cluster “Three Volcanoes Park” in Kamchatka, passed a compliance assessment according to the national green building standard Green Zoom and received a gold level certificate. Green Zoom is a recognized Russian analogue of the international LEED and BREEAM certification standards.

The resort “Sopka Goryaya” became the first large-scale tourist project that was evaluated according to a standard confirming the use of highly efficient and environmentally friendly methods of construction of structures. “Green Zoom” is a national system of certification of real estate objects for compliance with the principles of sustainable development, developed at the Research Institute for Sustainable Development in Construction (NIIURS). To evaluate the design documentation of the Kamchatka resort, an industry version of the standard for tourist industry facilities was applied, reflecting the priority nature of the task of creating a favorable anthropogenic environment for recreational activities and the harmonious integration of tourist infrastructure into the natural environment.

The national green standard “Green Zoom – Tourism Industry” contains 63 evaluation criteria covering various facets of an investment and construction project: organizational parameters, choice of territory, efforts to preserve the natural environment, conservation of resources, energy efficiency and engineering innovations, construction and finishing materials, a favorable indoor environment, comfort, safety and accessibility for people.

“The Three Volcanoes Park is a unique project in all respects, the scale of which is unprecedented for the Kamchatka tourism industry. From the very beginning, we have been striving to make the project truly outstanding and significantly surpassing the industry average in terms of the quality of the tourist experience for its future guests, and in terms of engineering solutions, and in terms of harmonious integration into the natural and cultural landscape of Kamchatka,” says Dmitry Okorokov, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Park Three Volcanoes.

The large-scale tourist cluster “Three Volcanoes Park”, located near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, 60 kilometers from Yelizovo airport, will include the central tourist village – resort “Sopka Goryaya” and infrastructure for year-round active tourism around. The project is being implemented within the framework of the national project “Tourism and the Hospitality Industry” by a key investor, Interros, with the support of the Tourism Corporation.RF.

The new tourist cluster will provide comfortable and safe access to the impressive Mutnovsky, Vilyuchinsky and Gorely volcanoes, picturesque sea coves, thermal springs and waterfalls, numerous routes for natural tourism and magnificent ski slopes.

The heart of the cluster is the Hot Sopka Resort, a year-round balneological resort with almost 1,500 hotel rooms, a congress hall, an extensive park, a museum, an open geothermal lagoon and many thermal pools. “Goryaya Sopka” will be a place where a unique tourist experience and high technology will be combined. And the architectural and engineering solutions embedded in the project were highly appreciated by the Green Zoom certification system.

The key engineering innovation of the project is the use of renewable energy.  This energy is used for hot water supply and heating of all buildings, as well as for heating footpaths and promenades in winter. Hot water from the depths of Kamchatka will feed and heat numerous pools and baths all year round.

All technical communications of the Hot Hill are located underground, and the main buildings of the resort are connected by a single underground stylobate.  The stylobate provides all the technical logistics and hides it from the eyes of the guests.

The most important value of the Kamchatka project is the natural beauty of the place. To emphasize this, natural materials are used in the decoration of facades and premises of the Hot Hill, and the principles of biophilic design will be applied to the landscaping of the territory, blurring the boundaries between the anthropogenic and natural environment.

“We are very pleased to observe the prospects of the Russian tourism industry, revealed through the joint efforts of the authorities and business. Having many years of experience in certifying construction projects in other sectors of the development market, we are concerned that the rapid development of tourist destinations does not lose its sustainable character. In this regard, we actively encourage developers to change the quality of the built environment for the better in one way or another – in resource conservation, in minimizing the impact on the natural environment, in creating comfortable and safe conditions for life, work and recreation,” says Vera Burtseva, director of the Research Institute for Sustainable Development in Construction, developer of the line national green building standards “Green Zoom. – The resort “Sopka Goryaya” is a genuine nugget of the highest standard. The goal of the whole project – the opening of Kamchatka to tourists from all over Russia – cannot but inspire, its idea is so impressive, and the attention to detail is so close,  that we are fully confident that we are issuing a gold-level certificate for the resort’s design documentation and are looking forward to the implementation of this project, which forms a new standard for the entire Russian tourism industry.”
