How Aeroflot cancelled cheap tickets

Как «Аэрофлот» аннулировал дешёвые билеты

In a somewhat unexpected way, the national carrier explained why it was canceling cheap tickets to Phuket, which appeared as a result of a technical error.

It turns out that it’s all the fault of… antitrust law. After all, the cost of tickets sold is economically unreasonable and lower than the prices of competitors. Such an argument is given in the company’s response to the appeal of the Consumer Union of the Russian Federation, drawn up almost a month ago. You don’t need to be an expert in antitrust law to understand that Aeroflot’s explanation is such a thing. After all, the FAS is about inadequately inflated prices, cartel agreements and so on. And why the national bank suddenly staged an attraction of unheard–of generosity (as it turned out – an employee’s mistake, a human factor), neither consumers nor the FAS should care.

Meanwhile, the Transport Prosecutor’s Office submitted a submission to the General Director of PJSC Aeroflot “on the fact of violations (cancellation of legally purchased tickets. – “AN” note), and the issue of bringing a legal entity to administrative responsibility under Part 1 of Article 14.8 of the Administrative Code is also being considered,” at least that’s what the prosecutor’s office writes in response to an appeal from one of the injured passengers. Note that according to Part 1 of Article 14.8 of the Administrative Code of the Russian Federation, the amount of an administrative fine can reach as much as 10 thousand rubles.

In short, the further the merrier, and the end of this story is not yet in sight. Recall that on October 19, more than 3 thousand air tickets were purchased in the Aeroflot booking system at very attractive rates. The airline began to cancel these tickets, and at the moment it is known that about 400 “happy” passengers did not agree with this decision of Aeroflot and are filing lawsuits in court.

To Lapland only via Murmansk

It was hot last week on the Russian-Finnish border, but before talking about the complete closure of seven of the eight checkpoints, we note once again that this border has long been of minimal importance for tourism logistics, since for tourist purposes Russian citizens can enter Finland through the external border of Schengen only for immediate transit to a state outside the Schengen area.

Recall that at first Finland closed four border crossings with Russia in the south-east of the country due to the sharp influx of asylum seekers from countries such as Syria, Iraq, Pakistan and Somalia. Suomi believes that the Russian Federation is deliberately provoking the refugee crisis, the Russian authorities deny their participation in this process. Several special reports on the topic were published in the Russian media, journalists communicated with refugees and intermediaries, studied specialized chat rooms, and found no evidence that the Russian authorities were pushing refugees to the border in an organized manner.

After four border crossings were closed, refugees began to gather at the open checkpoint “Vartius-Luttia”, which is located near the Karelian town of Kostomuksha. According to the regional authorities, over the past week more than 150 foreigners with expired Russian visas who were heading towards the Russian-Finnish border were detained in Karelia. Their future fate will be decided by the court. They face fines and forced expulsion from Russia.

But despite such active participation of the Karelian authorities in solving the refugee crisis, the Finnish authorities closed both the Vartius-Luttia checkpoint and two more crossings, leaving only one of the eight, the northernmost, in operation. The checkpoint “Raya-Jooseppi – Lotta” is located beyond the Arctic circle, 240 kilometers from Murmansk and operates only 4 hours a day – from 10:00 to 13:00. The governor of the Murmansk region, Andrei Chibis, has introduced a high-alert regime in the region.

According to the statement of the head of the Finnish border guard Markku Hassinen, the border crossings are closed until December 23.

New Year

According to the PCT (Russian Union of Travel Industry), the highest average cost of hotel accommodation during the New Year holidays among the 10 most popular domestic destinations was recorded in the Moscow region – just over 20 thousand rubles per day. In Moscow itself, it is 2.5 times lower – 8 thousand rubles. In general, the average cost of a New Year’s holiday in Russia increased by 8% over the year to 11 thousand rubles per day of hotel accommodation.

The number of bookings of Russian hotels for the New Year holidays increased by 52% compared to last year. The leaders of demand have traditionally been Krasnodar Territory, Moscow and St. Petersburg.
