In July 2024, the governmentThailand approved a new Destination Thailand Visa (DTV), allowing foreigners to travel and work in the country. Based on DTV, an expat can stay in Thailand for up to 180 days per entry, the visa itself is valid for 5 years.
During the first month of operation, 47 Thai embassies and consulates issued about 1,200 DTV visas, and another 40 migration agencies have not yet reported their data. However, it is already clear that the visa is in high demand among expats.

Which of the foreigners can apply for a Destination Thailand Visa (DTV)?
The DTV visa in Thailand is also known as the “digital nomad visa”, so this permit is best suited for freelancers, digital nomads or remote workers who are looking for an easy way to live and work in the tropical paradise of Thailand.
Foreigners who plan to participate in Thai Soft Power government initiative programs – attend Thai boxing or cooking classes, participate in sports training, undergo medical treatment, take short-term training courses, participate in seminars or in art or music festivals – can also receive this permit.
A brief overview of Destination Thailand Visa (DTV)
– Validity period
DTV is a multiple–entry visa, valid for 5 years. However, a foreigner can stay in the country for only 180 days per entry.
You can renew the DTV every year.
– Where to register?
You can apply for a permit at the Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate or online through the official website of the electronic Visa of Thailand.
You CANNOT apply for this visa while in Thailand. You will have to return to your country of residence and apply through the Thai Embassy or consulate participating in the program.
– Basic requirements and rules
The minimum age of the applicant for a DTV visa is 20 years old.
It is also worth noting that DTV is a special type of tourist visa in Thailand, which means that its holders are prohibited from obtaining a Thai work permit and working for companies in Thailand.
The cost of obtaining a DTV visa is 10,000 baht (US$295).

Is it allowed to move to Thailand with your family under a DTV visa?
DTV Visa allows family members of a foreigner to join the main owners of DTV. There are no restrictions on the number of dependents you can bring to Thailand, but they must be either a spouse or a dependent child under the age of 20.
Each dependent must apply separately and pay a separate visa fee.
List of documents and requirements for expats to obtain a DTV visa?
Before applying, a foreigner must prepare the following set of documents:
– Passport or travel document.
– Passport-size photo.
– Information about the current place of residence.
– Confirmation of the availability of finances for obtaining a visa: a total amount of at least 500,000 baht (US$ 14,700) has been set, however, the amount of assets may vary depending on the embassy or consulate where you will apply. Proof can be bank statements, payslips, or a letter of sponsorship.
– Confirmation of the grounds for obtaining a visa:
1. Workcation: an employment contract, a certificate of employment from your country, or a professional portfolio reflecting your work as a freelancer.
2. Thai Soft Power: proof of confirmation of participation in the event or a letter of appointment from a hospital or medical center.
3. The main owner of the DTV: proof of kinship, such as a marriage certificate, birth certificate or adoption certificate.
