Kepenik district was once an ancient settlement of Slavic tribes who built the first fortress here. No matter how surprising it may be, but in the most atheistic European capital, the religious sights of Berlin are of great value, the presentation of which will be incomplete without mentioning the oldest basilica in the capital — the church of St. Nicholas. The parish was opened near the place where the famous trade route crossed the river Spree. It is for this reason that the church acquired the name of St. Nicholas of Myra, who is considered the patron saint of trade. Throughout its 8-century history, the building has been restored several times, the last time it happened in the 1980s. Today it is a neo-Gothic building topped by two tall spires. 33. Treptov Park
The Soviet War memorial “Warrior Liberator” in Berlin’s Treptow Park
Modern Berlin is famous for its numerous green parks, of which there are more than 2.5 thousand. One of these places is Treptov Park, which became especially famous after the Great Patriotic War, when a large-scale memorial complex to the fallen Soviet soldiers was built here. This largest monument was opened in 1949 as a sign of victory over Nazi Hitler, and about 7 thousand remains of Soviet soldiers who died in the battles for Berlin were reburied in nearby mass graves. Conditionally, the monument is divided into 5 parts — the complex is opened by the sculpture “Grieving Mother”, followed by an alley of birches leading to the entrance to the fraternal cemetery, then a symbolic gate in the form of bowed banners and figures of grieving soldiers, then an Alley of sarcophagi in the form of symbolic cubes with bas-reliefs telling about the exploits of soldiers, and finally a large sculpture “Warrior-liberator” on a high pedestal.
