The trend towards opening restaurants continues in St. Petersburg

В Санкт-Петербурге сохраняется тенденция на открытие ресторанов

In 2023, at least 250 new catering outlets were opened on the streets of St. Petersburg, every third of which is a restaurant. Such data is provided by Nikoliers analysts based on bypassing key trade corridors and studying open sources. 75% of the restaurants opened in 2023 in St. Petersburg are non-chain establishments. Most of the open establishments offer Russian, Italian and European cuisine.

Bars took the second place in terms of the number of openings — in 2023, at least 60 drinking establishments appeared on the city map. About the same number of cafes opened on the streets of the city. About 25 new coffee shops appeared in 2023. Bistros (at least 10 establishments), bakeries (at least five establishments), pastry shops (at least four establishments) and pie shops (at least two) were also opened.

Almost half of all discoveries (about 120) over the year occurred in the Central District. In total, at least 42 restaurants and 38 bars have appeared here. Nevsky Prospekt and Rubinstein Street remained the most popular locations for restaurateurs, and Rubinstein and Nekrasov Streets for bar owners.

In other central locations of St. Petersburg, the number of public catering establishments that appeared during the year turned out to be several times less than in the Central District: Petrogradsky and Admiralteysky districts accounted for 14% of the total number of openings, while Vasilyevsky Island accounted for only 10%.

However, if restaurants appeared most often on the Petrograd side, then bars appeared in the Vasileostrovsky district. In addition, there are differences in the concepts of establishments: if European and Mediterranean cuisine prevails in the new restaurants of the Petrogradsky district, then on Vasilyevsky Island most cafes, restaurants and bistros offer Asian cuisine.

It is worth noting that not all new establishments are still operating: at least 10% of the catering outlets that opened in 2023 ceased to exist by January 2024. At the same time, the rotation of tenants mainly takes place within one segment, that is, a new catering establishment appears in place of a closed restaurant or cafe.

“St. Petersburg has rightfully occupied leading positions in the country’s restaurant and bar ratings for many years. The development of unique restaurant concepts enriches the gastronomic experience of visitors.Non—chain establishments are often distinguished by their individuality, atmosphere and attention to detail, which makes their visit especially memorable, – says Yulia Kuznetsova, Deputy Director of the Department of retail real estate Nikoliers.
