The logical consequence of the boom in remote work was the introduction of all kinds of programs and visas for people who work in this format and at the same time want to do it from different parts of the world. There are already a decent number of Caribbean and American countries among them. Read in this article which countries they are and on what terms they accept nomads. 

We wrote in detail about the available programs for digital nomads in all countries of the world in our large material. 

In this article, we will focus on America and the Caribbean and tell you how things are with special visas for nomads there. 

Antigua and Barbuda

Antigua and Barbuda has the Antigua and Barbuda Nomad Digital Residence Visa program. 

Features: you can move with your family, you do not need to pay income tax.

The validity period of the visa is 2 years.

Requirements:

  • Age 18 and older.
  • Work outside Antigua and Barbuda with the possibility of remote employment. 
  • A confirmed annual income of at least $50,000.
  • No criminal record.
  • Medical insurance, including travel insurance.

You can apply online. 

After submitting the application and paying the fee, the application will be reviewed within 5-7 business days. The result will be notified by e-mail. You may need to apply for an additional entry visa.

Registration fee: for one applicant — $1,500; applicant + spouse — $2,000; applicant + up to 3 dependents (family) — $3,000. An additional fee of $650 is charged for each additional person over 3. All fees are non-refundable. 

Living in the country: rent of a “one—bedroom apartment” – €340-680, communal apartment — €280, monthly pass — €30, lunch at an inexpensive cafe — € 8.5.

Bahamas

The Bahamas Extended Access Travel Stay (BEATS) program allows you to work or study remotely in the Bahamas.

Visa validity period: 1 year

Requirements:

  • A valid international passport.
  • Medical insurance.
  • For remote work — confirmation of employment.
  • For distance learning — a student ID card.

The visa application is submitted online on the website of the Bahamas Immigration Service. 

Application processing time: about 5 working days

The cost of the visa:

  • In the case of remote work — $1000 for the main applicant, $500 for each dependent.
  • In the case of studying remotely — $500 for each applicant.
  • The application fee is $25.

Living in the country: rent a one—bedroom apartment – €930-1000, communal apartment — €260, monthly pass — €40, lunch at an inexpensive cafe — €24.

Barbados

In Barbados, the Welcome Stamp program for nomads has been in effect since 2020. 

Features: Remote workers do not need to pay Barbados income tax, but they are subject to 17.5% VAT on purchases.

The validity period of the visa is 1 year, with the possibility of extension.

Requirements:

  • It is necessary to confirm an income of $50,000 per year.
  • Photo, passport scan.
  • Confirmation of family ties (for a family visa).

You can apply for a visa online. The cost is $2000 (for a family — $3000).

The cost of the visa: for one applicant — $2000, for a family — $3000. The payment is non-refundable and must be made within 28 days after approval.

The application review period is about 7 days.

Belize

Belize offers nomads a “Work where your vacation” program. 

Features: a visa cannot be converted into a residence permit; you can move with your family.

Visa validity period: up to 6 months. Visa extension is not provided.

Requirements:

  • Citizenship of the EU, UK, USA or Canada.
  • Remote work outside Belize.
  • The minimum annual income is $75,000 for one applicant or $100,000 for a family/couple.
  • Bank statement.
  • Certificate of non-criminal record (no older than 6 months).
  • A valid international passport.
  • Travel insurance with a minimum of $50,000 coverage.

A visa application is being submittedonline to the Belize Immigration Department. The visa is issued immediately upon arrival. 

The cost of the visa is $500 per adult, $200 for a child under 18 years old.

Bermuda

Bermuda has a Work From Bermuda Certificate program for remote workers and students. 

Validity period: 1 year, with the possibility of extension. 

Features: Family members wishing to apply must submit a separate application; pets are allowed to be imported if the requirements are met; exemption from income tax in Bermuda, access to medical services.

Requirements: no criminal record, health insurance, work contract or business registration outside Bermuda, monthly income of about $5,000.

Review period: 5 working days.

Cost: $275 for the applicant.

Brazil

Brazil issues a residence permit for digital nomads. Requests are processed within a month. 

The validity period of the visa is 1 year with the possibility of extension for an equal period, subject to the requirements.

Requirements:

  • Prove the status of remote employment (this may be a contract with a company outside Brazil, business ownership documents, a declaration of the possibility of remote work).
  • Earn from $1,500 per month or have $18,000 in a bank account. 
  • Provide a ticket to Brazil, a certificate of non-conviction and medical insurance valid in that country. 

You can apply for a visa at the Brazilian Consulate abroad or at the Ministry of Justice and Public Security of the country, if the applicant is already there.

Colombia

In Colombia, the visa for digital nomads (Visa V Digital Nomads) appeared on October 22, 2022. 

Peculiarities: The visa does not allow you to work or receive income from Colombian employers; it is possible to bring family members as beneficiaries. 

Visa validity period: up to 2 years.

Requirements:

  • A letter from a foreign employer describing the employment relationship and payment terms.
  • For entrepreneurs — a motivation letter about the project.
  • Confirmed income of at least three valid minimum monthly salaries for the last 3 months (about 876 USD*).
  • Medical insurance with coverage in Colombia.

You can apply for a visa at the Colombian Consulate.

* According to information from the official website of the Colombian Ministry of Labor, the minimum monthly salary (SMLMV) at the time of publication of the article is set at 1,160,000 Colombian pesos, which is equivalent to about 292 US dollars.

Costa Rica

In Costa Rica, the visa for nomads belongs to the subcategory “Stay for remote workers and service providers” (Estancia para Trabajadores Remotos y Proveedores de Servicios). We are talking about a residence permit for foreigners who remotely provide paid services to an organization or individual outside Costa Rica.

The validity period of the visa: is set individually when processing the document. 

Requirements:

  • The minimum monthly income from outside Costa Rica for one applicant is $3,000; if family members are also applying, $4,000.
  • Bank statements or a certificate of income from an auditor/notary. 
  • Documents for family members (marriage/birth certificates, etc.).

You can apply online through the Tramite Ya portal or in person at the Immigration office.

The decision is made within 15 calendar days. After approval, it is necessary to issue an immigration document and medical insurance within 3 months. 

To extend the document, you will need: proof of stay in the country for at least 80 days per year, as well as updated proof of income, payment of duties, medical insurance, etc.

The cost of the visa:

  • The state fee is $100 upon initial application. 
  • Additional state duty in the amount specified in the decision on approval, according to art. 215 of the Migration Law.
  • $90 for requesting documents on legal stay and issuing a certificate, as well as fees to a Special Immigration Social Fund.

All documents issued in a foreign language must have an official translation into Spanish. And applications for minor children must be submitted by a parent or guardian.

Curacao

There is a HOME in Curaçao program for digital nomads in Curaçao. 

Peculiarities:

  • You can’t work for local employers.
  • There are no strict requirements for the amount of income.
  • There is no need to pay income tax to Curacao.
  • The validity period of the visa is six months with the possibility of extension for another 6 months. 

Requirements:

  • To confirm the availability of remote work — a contract with a foreign employer OR documents on ownership/partnership in a foreign company OR contracts with foreign clients (for freelancers).
  • Medical insurance.
  • You can apply for a visa online. 

Visa processing costs $ 294 ($ 500 for each additional person).

Application processing time: about 2 weeks

*Dutch and US citizens can stay on the island of Curacao for up to 6 months as tourists.

Mexico

Mexico issues a visa to nomads under the Temporary Resident Visa program on the basis of sufficient financial resources for living — it is impossible to work in the country on this visa.

Visa validity period: not specified.

Requirements:

  • The average monthly balance of $102,671 Canadian dollars (about $80,000 USD) over the past 12 months OR
  • Monthly income or pension over $6,160 Canadian dollars for the last 6 months (excluding taxes). 

Apply for a visaYou can sign up for an interview at the Mexican Embassy. After entering the country, you will need to come to the immigration office within 30 days, show all documents, pass an interview and get a resident card.

Montserrat 

Montserrat offers a premium Montserrat Remote Worker Stamp visa. This is a 12-month residence permit for foreigners working remotely for a company or individuals registered outside Montserrat.

Features: holders of this visa, as well as residents of the country, can obtain local IDs, use banking services, rent housing, send children to schools.

The validity period of the visa is 1 year.

Requirements:

  • Confirmation of remote employment/business registration certificate, 
  • Annual income is over $70,000. 
  • Medical insurance. 

You can apply for a visa online. 

The decision is made within 7-14 business days.

The cost of registration is $500 (for a family of up to 3 people — $750, each subsequent one — + $250).

Panama hat

In Panama, the Visa de Corta Estancia como Trabajador Remoto digital nomad visa is valid, the issuance of which is regulated by the Servicio Nacional de Migración. This visa is designed for foreigners working remotely for a foreign company or as a freelancer. 

The validity period of the visa is 9 months, it can be extended for the same period.

Requirements:

  • A work contract with a foreign company or proof of self-employment. 
  • Proof of income of at least $36,000 per year from abroad. 
  • Medical insurance.

You can apply for a visa at the Immigration Service of Panama.

Visa fee: 50 balboa (about 50 USD). 

Living in the country: rent of a “one—bedroom apartment” – €500-750, communal apartment — €90, monthly pass — €23, lunch at an inexpensive cafe — €9.

Uruguay

In Uruguay, foreigners can obtain a temporary identity card (Hoja de identidad provisoria), within which there is a separate category for “digital nomads” (nomada digital).

Validity period: up to 180 days with the possibility of extension. 

Requirements:

  • A copy of the identity card or travel document.
  • A completed declaration in the prescribed form.
  • For renewal: a certificate of non-criminal record for the last 5 years from countries where you have lived for more than 6 months.

You can apply for a visa either online through the portal or in person.

Cost: 55.71 USD.

Ecuador

A digital nomad visa in Ecuador gives you the opportunity to work remotely and immerse yourself in the culture of this country. 

Features: a visa can be converted into a residence permit; you cannot move with your family.

Requirements:

  • Provide documents confirming remote work for a company or an individual abroad.
  • Have a monthly income from abroad of at least three minimum Ecuadorian salaries (at the time of writing, the amount of one such is approximately 450 euros) or an annual income of 36 minimum salaries.
