Tourists were warned about the disease, from which one in five dies – this infection has now begun to spread rapidly across the resort countries of the Mediterranean. We are talking about dengue fever — only the UK Health Safety Agency has issued the “biggest warning in history” about it.
The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control also confirmed the danger. He reports a “significant” increase in dengue fever cases returning to Europe after an explosive increase in the number of cases.
There are two reasons for this — firstly, the outbreak of the disease has been going on for several years in endemic areas, primarily in South and Southeast Asia, especially in India. “As a result, there has been a significant increase in the number of cases of dengue fever imported into the EU/EEA since the beginning of the year. The likelihood of further transmission of the dengue virus on the mainland of the EU/EEA is associated with the importation of the virus by viremic travelers to susceptible areas with established and active competent vectors,” the agency added. And this is the second reason — the Aedes albopictus mosquito has settled in a significant part of Europe.
Last year, continued transmission of the virus, combined with an unexpected spike in dengue fever cases, led to a historic high of more than 6.5 million cases and more than 7,300 reported dengue-related deaths. This season, there is a risk of deterioration of the situation.
At the same time, according to reports, the mortality rate can reach 20%. The World Health Organization has warned: “Most people with dengue fever have mild or no symptoms, and they get better after 1-2 weeks. In rare cases, dengue fever can be severe and lead to death.”
