Photos and videos of huge pillars of flame are posted on social networks. Residents of the neighboring city of Proletarsk are asked not to leave their homes. More than 500 firefighters are fighting the fire. According to local authorities, the fire area has reached 10,000 square meters, and it is very difficult to localize this type of fire
Three days after the ignition of the tanks at the fuel base near Proletarsk, it can be concluded that if the fire can be localized, it is only in places and with great difficulty. The group of firefighters has grown tenfold during this time. According to Valery Gornich, the head of the Proletarian district administration, more than 500 people are fighting the fire, dozens have already applied for medical help. It is planned to use aviation — four Il-76s. Due to the intense heat, fire trucks can’t even get close.
The maid noted that diesel fuel tanks are burning, there is no threat of explosion, there is also no threat to people, evacuation is not expected. And the governor of the Rostov region, Vasily Golubev, clarified that the fire started on the night of August 18 after the wreckage of the drone fell. At first it was a local fire, now there is data on the ignition of 20 tanks out of 74. The fire area reached 10 thousand square meters.
The elimination of this type of fire is extremely difficult, says Konstantin Kuznetsov, a leading expert at the Fire Safety Foundation:
Konstantin Kuznetsov, a leading expert of the Fire Safety Foundation, “An oil depot after a nuclear reactor is the most difficult thing in the organization of extinguishing. Oil is not extinguished with water, oil is extinguished with foam, which prevents the fire from spreading, but until that volume burns out, the ignition of which has already occurred, it is very rarely possible to extinguish the fire. The effect of extinguishing is that the foam envelops the fire site and prevents oxygen from penetrating to the gorenje, thus there is a certain attenuation, but due to the enormous thermal load, the foam dissolves, evaporates. The extinguishing process is very complicated, so there is a special system at oil depots that cools the tank so that the tank walls do not melt and the volume of oil does not spill out. As a rule, oil depots have their own fire brigades in order to localize the fire as soon as possible.”
Satellite images of the surrounding territory of Proletarsk appeared on social networks, where, allegedly, the same fire of fuel storages was recorded. We are talking about an extensive industrial zone 2 kilometers from the city — the reservoirs are located there quite tightly to each other. There are suggestions that we are talking about the Kavkaz combine of Rosrezerv. However, there is no confirmation of the authenticity of these images.
Almost all of Rosreserv’s activities are strictly classified. The exact storage volumes and the volume of accumulated reserves are unknown. Rosreserv’s locations are also classified — they are not displayed on maps. It is known that Rosreserv stores stocks for emergencies: epidemics, natural disasters, crop failures and other black days. The list of products, again, is classified. An approximate list can be presented if based on the groups of products participating in the auction. Everything is there — from medicines and food to energy resources, transport and computer equipment. Rosreserv is an emergency reserve, it is not used in the usual routine activities. Harvesters do not fill up with fuel from these storages, and it is not sent to civilian gas stations.

In the photos and videos published by eyewitnesses, it can be assumed that standard RVS-5000 fuel tanks are burning, that is, capacities of 5 thousand cubic meters, says independent analyst Dmitry Lyutyagin:
Dmitry Lyutyagin independent analyst “There are really about 5 thousand cubic meters of diesel fuel in one tank, and if you take all these tanks, it turns out that about 85 thousand tons are now in the process of ignition. In 2023, about 85 million tons were processed. That is, 0.1% of the production volume that the Russian Federation produces per year is now burning. If the money is estimated at wholesale prices, which are given by refineries, about 3.8 billion rubles of diesel fuel are currently in the process of ignition.”
And the footage also shows that the tanks were not covered with anything. Of course, we are not talking about some kind of sarcophagus, as at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, but there is not even a simple chain-link net that stretches over the containers and does not allow drones to pass. Experts do not exclude that since emergencies at oil and fuel facilities now occur regularly, control agencies will develop amendments to safety requirements and the simplest barriers may soon become mandatory.
