The Governing Council of the Galapagos Islands has decided to change the fee for travelers to visit this place, according to the industry publication Vestnik ATOR. The tourist tax for foreigners will be increased by 2 times.
Now visitors to the islands who come from other countries have to pay $ 100 for the right to see the protected islands, whereas for Ecuadorian citizens, a visit to this region costs $ 6. After six months, the amount of the fee will change: foreigners will give $200, and Ecuadorians will give $30. Local authorities explain the tax increase by the need to carry out various environmental measures and promote the Galapagos Islands.
Recall that the Galapagos Islands are located in the Pacific Ocean about a thousand kilometers west of the continental coast of Ecuador. The 19 islands of this group, together with the adjacent water area, are called the “living museum of evolution”. The great isolation of these lands, as well as constant seismic and volcanic activity, have turned the islands into a living biological laboratory. So, it was in the Galapagos that Charles Darwin observed the species of finches, which led to the creation of the theory of evolution.
