Smart home: the more practice, the less fear

Умный дом: чем больше практики, тем меньше опасений

A smart home is convenient, practical, safe, although not cheap, which is somewhat frustrating: Eight out of ten Russians think so or so. The remaining two will not be able to object or agree, because they still do not know anything about such technologies. Here is an extremely brief retelling of the results of a recent VTSIOM study on the attitude of Russian residents to smart homes.

However, as usual, the devil is in the details. For example, of the 80% of Russians who know about smart homes, only almost a quarter (23%) have practical experience of “communicating” with such systems, and 57% have heard about them, but have never personally used them. So, according to the results of the study, the real use of smart home technologies is concentrated mainly in certain target groups — young, educated citizens, especially men, with a high income level, who actively use the Internet. At the same time, a significant part of the country’s population is still in the “non-involvement zone”: These are mostly older citizens with low income and education, who prefer television to the Internet and live in rural areas.

“Awareness and personal experience of use play a key role in shaping a positive perception of smart home technologies: the more knowledge and practice, the higher the approval and less fear. Among smart home users, the positive attitude reaches 80%, which is noticeably higher compared to those who are knowledgeable but not using (56%) and those who first heard about the smart home during the survey (39%). Only 5% of smart home users have a negative impression of this system, which is three to four times less than the rest of Russians (14% among the knowledgeable, but not using, and 19% among the uninformed),” VTSIOM analysts note.

The two main characteristics of a smart home in the perception of Russians are convenience and comfort (44%), but, alas, high cost (32%). One in four believes that a smart home is a time saver (25%), control and security (24%).

In general, unconditionally positive characteristics sound much more often, and Russians are more positive about smart home technologies. However, there is also some skepticism related to security issues, the complexity of implementation and the limited application. Thus, one in five (20%) associates a smart home with a threat to personal data, 16% believe that such systems are suitable only for new homes and multi-storey new buildings, 10% think that a smart home is difficult to install. Some of the respondents are confident in the high electricity consumption of a smart home (9%), as well as that such systems are available only to “IT specialists” (7%).

According to the survey results, the most popular smart home services among users are online bill payment (55%), remote/voice control of appliances and lighting (48-54%), as well as video surveillance of parking and playgrounds (41%). These functions provide a high degree of convenience, automation and remote control of the home environment.

Strangely enough, functions that help to interact with management companies and manage energy resources turned out to be less popular among respondents: automatic transmission of meter readings (31%), remote control of energy resources (28%), online interaction with a management organization (25%). About as often, users use technologies to control housing: video surveillance inside the apartment / house (25%) and remote access control to the yard and house (23%).

“In general, the picture of the use of smart home systems reflects the emphasis on functions that increase the comfort and efficiency of home life, as well as enable remote control and management,” VTSIOM experts conclude.
