Luxury vacation on Apocalypse Island

The island of Patmos, located in the eastern Aegean Sea under a bright blue sky, may seem like a common holiday destination in Greece, but in fact it is not like that.

The end of the world begins here.

Walking along the winding paths and paths through the center of the island, you might never have guessed that apocalyptic visions arose here, inspiring St. John to write the Book of Revelation, which is the final pages of the New Testament and contains some of the most terrifying descriptions in the Bible.

On this island is the Greek Orthodox chapel of St. Anne, built in the 17th century, which surrounds the cave where John is said to have received visions that he interpreted as judgment Day.

Without the sign that says “Cave of the Apocalypse”, you would never have known that you were entering a sacred grotto. The chapel is located at the end of the path, and its northern side is covered by a rock niche.

When you go inside, you will see a silver mitre towering over the sealed hole where, according to legend, the biblical character was buried. A silver fence surrounds the crack, whose hands he is said to have placed on this stone to stand up.

“The words that John saw in his vision are written here,” says the caretaker of the chapel, pointing to an open Bible that stands on a natural base formed by a rock.

“And here, the voice of God rang out and addressed the saint,” he adds, pointing to a crack in the rock above.

The crack ends with a triple dot, which is considered a symbol of the holy trinity in Christianity – Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Patmos, located in the north of the Dodecanese group of Greek islands, does not have an airport and it is not so easy to get to it, but thanks to its quiet atmosphere it attracts VIPs from all over the world: the Aga Khan, David Bowie and Giorgio Armani have been regular guests of the island for many years.

In fact, some of them made Patmos their home and tried to do their best for the good of the island.

Nicholas Negropont, from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Media Laboratory, has installed a free Wi-Fi network throughout the island so that everyone can use the Internet.

Another admirer of Patmos, financier Charles Pict, restored three ancient windmills on the hill opposite the monastery. One of them is fully operational and produces coarse flour.

Lambi Beach in the north of Patmos is decorated with colorful orange-yellow, red and yellow stones – the effect is simply amazing.

Another interesting place is the Petra sand spit, adjacent to the Kallikatsu Rock. According to legend, this rock was formed from the curse of the young girl’s mother, who forbade her to swim here immediately after Holy Communion.

Another attraction is the beautiful fishing village of Grikos, located opposite the small island of Tragonissi, which serves as a natural protection from the wind, on which there is a safe sandy beach.

Many people believe that the island is already a kind of paradise due to its remoteness and inaccessibility.
