Why is the hot water turned off
The 2023/2024 heating season ended on April 3 [1]. Almost immediately after that, the city began annual hydraulic testing of pipelines and planned shutdowns of hot water. Utilities cannot completely abandon such work yet, this is due to the specifics of water pipes. The networks through which hot water flows wear out and are prone to corrosion. To avoid accidents in winter, the system is serviced during the warmer months.
The integrity of the pipelines is checked with high pressure — one and a half times higher than the working pressure. The test is considered successful if the site withstands this load for ten minutes [2]. Since such pressure is critical for intra-house communications, the supply of hot water to apartments is temporarily limited.
The timing of turning off hot water is regulated — no more than 14 days [3]. But in practice, they can turn on the water earlier. By the way, a couple of decades ago, such work took almost a month — up to 21 days.

Management companies or HOA are required to notify residents about the upcoming shutdown of hot water. Most often, the ad is placed on a special stand or on the entrance door of the entrance. You can check your house yourself:
What to do before turning off the hot water
After the end of the heating season, the CHP and boiler houses continue to work, but reduce the pressure in the heating networks. The responsibility to disable the in-house system lies with the specialists of the service organization. They also take readings of the general household meter, if available.
Since pressure increases in pipelines during maintenance work, this creates some risks for apartment owners. To protect the plumbing in the house and prevent an accident, experts recommend doing two things:
- turn off the hot water valve. This will avoid a water hammer due to a sharp pressure surge in the network.;
- keep the faucets in the off position. Otherwise, the water will flow freely from the tap when it is given. If no one is at home at this moment, it is possible that you will flood the neighbors.

There are several options for how to survive the time when the house is disconnected from the hot water supply. The most affordable thing is to heat water in a kettle or large pots. You can also buy a subscription to a fitness club for a month, visit relatives and friends from other areas from time to time, rent an apartment or a place in a hostel with a shower. There are other solutions:
- installing the boiler. This is not the most budget option, but it is the most convenient. With a boiler, turning off the hot water will go unnoticed. Such water storage devices operate from the power grid, and the tank volume varies from 10 to 100-150 liters;
- purchase of a running water heater. The principle of operation of a running water heater is similar to a boiler, but water does not accumulate in it. Thus, when the tap is opened, cold water will flow for a while, gradually heating up. There are many models of such devices — from a mixer to a system with a shower head. You can set the temperature as desired;
- foot shower. A more economical option, but at the same time compact and mobile. You can take such a shower with you on hikes or to the country. The “stomper” works like a foot pump. One end of the hose is lowered into a container with preheated water, and pressure is created by pressing the feet on a special platform.
Where to go if you haven’t been given hot water
Usually, prevention on hot water supply networks is completed on time or ahead of schedule. When all the deadlines have passed, and the water has not been given, then it is worth contacting your CC or HOA first. You can find out which company services your home from the information in the latest receipt for housing and communal services or the GIS housing and communal services portal.
In addition, you can call the Rosvodokanal-Voronezh hotline at 206-77-06 and 206-77-07.
In all other cases, not related to scheduled work, it is allowed to turn off the hot water for no longer than eight hours per month. Utilities are required to eliminate the consequences of accidents on dead-end highways within a day, and one shutdown should not last more than four hours.
