The press services of the Sochi mountain resorts Krasnaya Polyana and Rosa Khutor reported that the amount of snow that fell during the three weeks of November has already exceeded the monthly norm. According to forecasts of its own weather services, snowfalls will cover the region again in the last days of autumn.
The weather on the Black Sea coast of the North Caucasus decided not to be capricious and, on the contrary, assumed “increased obligations”. Only in the second half of November, according to the meteorologists of Rosa Khutor, almost 360 mm of precipitation, including snow, fell only in the altitude range from 1600 to 1800 m, which is almost twice the monthly norm.
A sufficient amount of snow allowed the technical services of the resort to bring snowmobiles to the slopes. Thus, work has begun on the formation of a canvas for the movement of personnel. After the snowfall forecast for the end of the month, the thickness of the cover in the Rosa Khutor highlands may grow up to 80 cm.
Meteorologists of Krasnaya Polyana have already reported that the thickness of the snow cover is 10 cm higher than the annual average. We are talking about mountainous terrain at elevations over 2000 m. Precipitation expected in the last days of November may increase the height of the “pillow” by several tens of centimeters at once.
Heavy November snowfalls will allow the ski season to open at least on schedule. It is scheduled to start at the Rosa Khutor resort on December 1, and the ski trails are scheduled to open on the 22nd. The planned date in Krasnaya Polyana is the 15th.
