The historic fort d was opened in Marseille, France’The Entrecasteau, which has been closed to the public for the last 360 years, reports Le Figaro. It should become one of the favorite vacation spots of Marseillais and the most interesting object for tourists.

The fortress of d’entrecasteau is the upper part of the former fort of St. Nicholas. This gigantic fortification was located at the entrance to the old port of Marseille. It was built in the middle of the XVII century in record time – in just 4 years. In the 19th century, the city plan changed: a boulevard was created that divided the fortress into two parts – the lower fort of Admiral Gantom descending to the sea and the upper fort of d’Entrecasteau, named after the French rear admiral and navigator. Over the years, the upper port has been a prison, barracks for the army and, of course, access to it was closed to ordinary visitors. In 2010, the military finally handed over the fortress to Marseille, and restoration work was carried out in it.

Fort D is now open to the public.’The Entrecasteau combines gardens, restaurants and a public space for various events. The fortress offers a breathtaking view of the old port, it is one of the best places in Marseille to watch the sunset from. You can visit the citadel in May 2024 every weekend, and from July 5 – from Wednesday to Sunday. Up to and including August, the fort’s doors are open from 12:00 to 22:00, in September, October and April – from noon to 20:00, from November to March – until 18:00.
