From April 15, 2024, Finland indefinitely closes two sea checkpoints Haapasaari and Santio, and also stops the movement of pleasure craft through the port of Nuiyamaa along the Saimaa Canal, the official telegram channel of the Federal Customs Service of Russia reports. Thus, the Finnish authorities have closed almost the checkpoints on the borders with our country.
It should be recalled that the Imatra, Kuusamo, Niirala, Nuiyamaa, Raya-Yosepi, Salla, Vaalimaa and Vartius automobile border crossings have also been closed indefinitely since April 15. Before that, the Finnish government extended the deadline for their closure by 2 months, but now they have decided to stop their work until a different decision is made. That is, between Russia and Finland, which have a common border with a length of 1,340 meters, only the Vainikkala railway checkpoint, through which freight trains run, will continue to operate.
Recall that the Saimaa Canal is an almost 60–kilometer-long shipping channel laid between the Finnish Lake Saimaa and the Vyborg Bay in Russia. 23.3 kilometers of the canal belong to Finland, and 34 kilometers to Russia. Finland leases 19.6 kilometers of the Russian part of the canal and the adjacent territory. The Saimaa Canal is used for trade between Russia and European countries.
