Is autumn the best time of the year in Cyprus?

Undoubtedly, this is so. Autumn in Cyprus is a wonderful time! September and October are the velvet season, when the sweltering heat has already subsided, and the sea is still warm and affectionate. Since mid-October, the sea cools down a little, but you can swim until November. By December, the water and air temperatures will be equal at around 18-19 degrees.

In October, the season closes — beaches and hotels are empty, water parks and water attractions on the beaches are closed. The time begins for leisurely walks around the city, hiking in the mountains and outdoor activities. Sports teams come to Cyprus for training and training camps.

Autumn is the richest season for vegetables and fruits. Peaches, plums, grapes, pomegranates, figs, citrus fruits, apples, prickly pear and all kinds of vegetables can be bought in shops and markets.

On land and at sea: is it comfortable in Cyprus in autumn?

On the sea

September and the first half of October are the best time, a real velvet season. There is no intense heat, as in July and August, but the water is very warm. All summer water attractions continue to operate:

  • Diving: you can dive to the Zenobia ferry that sank off the coast of Larnaca or to the underwater sculpture park in Protaras
  • Snorkeling: see fish and octopuses
  • Kitesurfing and windsurfing
  • Boat trips on yachts and pleasure boats (usually last until the end of October)
  • Water parks
  • All beach activities are also still available

On land

Now that the heat has subsided, it’s time to head inland and explore the mysterious medieval Northern Cyprus. September and October are the peak of excursions in Cyprus. The air temperature usually falls below 25-28 degrees during the day. It rains extremely rarely at this time.

Since autumn in Cyprus is extremely warm, this time of year can be considered a comfortable summer. The most important thing is that from about the middle of September, the period of desperate heat and humidity ends. The air becomes much drier and, in such conditions, all movements around the island will no longer burden you.

The sun is still active, and you need to be careful with it, but long walks are already possible. We are talking about city walks and hiking along natural routes.  Try to go to the national parks of Kavo Greco or Akamas on your own (if you are vacationing in Paphos.

Trips to mountain villages will be great, especially those where orchards and vineyards are located — you can visually see how our wines are made (and try, of course) or all sorts of local sweets made from fruits.  Pay attention to the villages of Lefkara, Vouni, Lanja, Lofu, Pedoulas, Kalopanaiotis, Kakopetria.

In Troodos in the highlands, rains are likely in October — November. If you are going to Troodos, check the weather forecast.

Hiking and walking in Cyprus in autumn

All natural routes are available without restrictions. Just keep an eye on the weather — on a rainy day, not all routes are safe and, in principle, interesting.

There are so many natural routes in Cyprus that it is quite difficult to recommend any specific ones. First of all, I recommend going to the Troodos mountains, because this place is the quintessence of great places and views. Mountain trails, hiking trails passing through waterfalls, viewpoints, grandiose geological park, nature reserves, etc. are waiting for you. In order to combine an educational holiday with a hike along one of the most popular natural routes, a Real Troodos tour was created, accessible even for children.

What kind of entertainment is available in Cyprus in autumn?

All summer activities are available until the end of October. For example, you can rent an ATV and enjoy the natural beauties inaccessible to others. When else will it be possible, for example, to drive through the entire Akamas National Park? I can recommend from myself: autumn boat trips along the coast of the national park Kavo Greco (ships leave Ayia Napa and Protaras), snorkeling and diving, hiking on saps, hiking in Troodos, ethnotourism in ancient villages and participation in harvest, gastronomic trips to farms and wineries (if you rent a car).

And the most important thing is excursions. In autumn, excursions in Cyprus are carried out without restrictions. All routes and themes are available, you can choose any one and, if the organizers are kind, it will become the main decoration of your vacation. During this period, travel to the northern part of Cyprus is especially good:

  • Grand Tour of Northern Cyprus
  • Northern Cyprus. Part 1
  • Northern Cyprus. Part 2
  • Famagusta and Salamis

Sightseeing tours will be an excellent choice for those who are in Cyprus for the first time at this time:

  • Cyprus in 10 hours
  • The perfect tour
  • Postcards from Cyprus
  • Mountain sketches

And if you are an experienced and sophisticated traveler, autumn gives you the opportunity to discover Cyprus on a super excursion that lasts as much as 12 hours: a Grand Tour of Southern Cyprus.

    Autumn events in Cyprus

In autumn, you can participate in the following events::

    • from the end of August to the middle of September Wine festivals are often held in the villages of the main wine-producing areas of Cyprus. These are quite pleasant and interesting local holidays organized by wineries. And it’s not just about wine. You can also see something like a fair at these festivals, where you can join the local cuisine and national crafts.
    • September 14 — The Exaltation of the Holy Cross is one of the most important holidays on the island, dedicated to St. Helena and St. To Constantine and the finding of the True Cross. A day off in Cyprus.
    • October 1 is Cyprus Independence Day. On this day, solemn parades and concerts are held, as well as festive events.
    • October 28 is Ohi Day. Solemn parades and concerts dedicated to the memory of the Greeks and Cypriots who participated in the Second World War.

    Fig

Since August, figs have been appearing on store shelves, the price is 3-5 euros / kg. In Cyprus, white (green) figs are more common, an extremely sweet and healthy fruit!

    Grenades

Pomegranates appear in August and September. Pomegranates in Cyprus are light, the grains are light pink with white, still soft, bones. Despite the “immature” appearance by our standards, pink pomegranates are stunningly sweet and delicious! The price per season is 2.5 — 5 euros per kg.

    Strawberry

She harvests twice a year in Cyprus. In summer, strawberries are also sold in stores, but they are greenhouse, not so sweet. In autumn, strawberries ripen in the open ground, under the gentle September sun. The cost is 2-5 euros per kg.

    Prickly pear

In August, you can see the fruits of the Mexican prickly pear on the shelves everywhere, which have perfectly taken root in Cyprus. Be careful! The fruits are very prickly, tongs are specially placed in stores for these fruits. If you are interested in trying it, but you do not want to take the thorns out of your fingers later, buy already peeled prickly pear fruits. The price is from 1.5 to 3 euros/ kg.

    Grape

In early autumn, grapes are harvested in the central part of Cyprus and the season of young wines begins. Local grape varieties are used in winemaking and do not always reach the shops. The cost per season is from 1.5 to 3 euros per kg.

    Citrus fruits

Tangerines, clementines, oranges, pomelo, grapefruits can be bought in Cyprus all year round. The price is from 1-1.5 euros per kg.

    Vegetables

An unimaginable variety of vegetables is grown in Cyprus. Some crops are even harvested several times a year. Feel free to buy cucumbers and tomatoes, avocados and asparagus, zucchini and eggplant, famous Cypriot potatoes and all kinds of greens.
