Liechtenstein offers two types of residence permits: a residence permit for the purpose of work and a residence permit without work. There are also clear quotas for the number of residence permits in the country:

– Citizens of the EEA are issued 72 permits per year. Half of the permits are chosen by lottery, the other half by the state, of which 56 are issued for employment, 16 for other migration purposes.

– Swiss citizens are issued 17 permits per year: 12 for employment and 5 for other purposes.

– Third-country nationals may be granted a residence permit under certain circumstances.

Moving to Liechtenstein for work

To move to Liechtenstein for employment, you must obtain a work visa and a residence permit for the purpose of work.

Usually, third-country nationals are granted such a permit only if you are a manager, specialist or qualified employee with completed training or long-term professional experience.

A residence permit will grant you a job in Liechtenstein for more than 12 months. Further, the document can be extended, provided that the grounds for work remain.

You can become a permanent resident after five consecutive years of residence in the country.

Cross-border workers

There is also a special category of workers in Liechtenstein – cross-border workers. This is a category of expats who work in Liechtenstein, but commute to work from abroad every day. However, for each separate category of cross-border workers, a separate document is required for employment:

– Swiss citizens – they do not need a work permit or registration with the police.

– EEC citizens working in Liechtenstein must register with the Migration and Passport Service within ten days after employment.

– Citizens of other countries – before working in Liechtenstein, citizens of other countries need a permit to travel across the border.
