The royal barge procession will take place in Bangkok on October 27.

The Royal Thai Navy continues to prepare for the barge procession, a solemn boat procession that precedes the ceremony of offering Kathin robes (monk’s robes dyed saffron) to the novices of Wat Arun Temple. It will be held on October 27.

The historic event dedicated to the celebrations on the occasion of the 6th cycle since the birth of His Majesty the King on July 28, 2024, will be the second Royal Barge Procession under the reign of the current monarch. The first one took place on December 12, 2019, and was dedicated to the coronation of His Majesty.

52 barges will take part in the procession, including four main royal vessels — Suphannahong, Narai Song Suban, Anantanakkharat and Anekkatphutchong. It is planned that 2,200 rowers will manage them: the procession will pass along the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok from Vasukri Pier to Wat Arun Temple. It will be 1.2 km long and 90 m wide. The date of the event is from 15.00 to 18.00 on October 27. On the eve of this event, tourists and locals can take a closer look at the royal barges and watch the rehearsals.

Dress rehearsals will be held along the route of the barges on October 15 and 22. You can admire them in specially designated locations on both sides of the Chao Phraya River embankment at the same time — from 15.00 to 18.00. From 08.30 to 16.30 daily at the Thonburi Naval Shipyard you can see the barges that will be involved in the celebrations.

The Royal Barge Procession is one of the most spectacular events in the world. In 2003, it was organized specifically for the APEC Summit in Bangkok and broadcast live on television in the participating countries. The rest of the time, the participating barges are on display at the National Museum of Royal Barges in Bangkok, on the Bangkok Noi Canal. The most impressive is considered to be the personal barge of the King of Thailand, Suphannahong, which was built in 1911. It is carved from solid wood and decorated with intricate gilded carvings, as well as colored glass. The length of the barge is 46 meters.: To launch it, a crew of 54 rowers is needed. Curiously, the rowing process is actually controlled not by the captain, but by the drummer: the rowers move the oars to the rhythm of the sound produced by the musical instrument.
