Old Town

There are seven administrative districts in Batumi, and everywhere there is a place to go. But it’s better to start with a walk through Old Batumi, where a lot of ancient architecture has been preserved. Here you can walk along the narrow cobbled streets, look at the beautiful buildings of the XIX century, go to a cozy cafe, take atmospheric photos. The buildings in the Gothic, Empire and Modern styles have been restored and look great. Some of them are more than 150 years old. Others were built recently, but taking into account the general style. There are many art objects and beautiful southern plants on the streets – palm trees, cypresses, pomegranates, lemons and laurels.

The old town is not very big, a couple of hours is enough for a leisurely acquaintance with it. After that, you can go to the sea, which is only a 10-minute walk away, or to other attractions. Let’s list what to see in the Old City of Batumi first of all.

Cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary

The largest Orthodox Church of Batumi is located on the western outskirts of the Old City, it can be seen from afar. It is an impressive three-domed building in the Neo-Gothic style. It is built of white stone, decorated with spires, huge stained glass windows and statues of saints at the entrance. The interior decoration includes patterns in blue and gold tones, marble decoration, frescoes and icons. There is a green area with benches around the cathedral.

The church was built at the turn of the XIX and XX centuries as a Catholic church, but it did not last long. When Georgia became part of the USSR, the services stopped, and after that the building was occupied by various organizations. In the post-Soviet period, the church was consecrated again, now as an Orthodox church. Now it is one of the most important architectural sights of Batumi.

Piazza Square

A wonderful place in Batumi, where you can go at any time of the day, is a picturesque Italian—style square. The Venetian St. Mark’s Square served as a model for it. Even a tower with a musical clock, similar to the famous bell tower, was built, and a boutique hotel is located in it. The houses framing the Piazza attract attention with arches, columns, stained glass windows and mosaic patterns. There are many shops, coffee shops and nightclubs here. In the morning it is a good place to have breakfast and start the tour. In the afternoon, you can have lunch and buy something. In the evening, with the lights on and live music, this place becomes simply magical.

The Armenian Church

There are many diasporas and denominations represented in Batumi, including the Armenian Apostolic Church. At the end of the XIX century, a large stone church was built for her — in the same place where the wooden one had stood before. The money for the construction was raised by the church parish, and the development of the project was entrusted to the Russian architect of Austrian origin Robert Marfeld. He created a beautiful structure with complex architecture. The soaring dome is visible from afar, and the bell tower looks like an arched gazebo or an open-topped tower.

During the Soviet years, the Armenian Church did not operate — the building housed a warehouse and a planetarium. In the 1990s, it was returned to the church, and then restored. Now it is one of the important sights of the city of Batumi, its photo will decorate your collection. A tall and lush magnolia tree grows on the territory of the church. It was planted by the painter Ivan Aivazovsky when he came to Batumi.

St. Nicholas Church

One of the places where you can go to Batumi to explore the ancient architecture is the Church of St. Nicholas. It is located near the Piazza, and it is more than 150 years old. The church was built on the initiative of the Greek diaspora, and the architect was also invited from Greece. He designed an unusual temple in the Byzantine style, which is easily recognizable by the striped facade of red brick and white stone. The fence with a large arched entrance is also decorated.

The Church of St. Nicholas was renovated in 2011. It’s in excellent condition now, so it’s worth seeing at least from the outside. If you go inside, you will see a beautiful interior with columns and paintings, as well as many icons of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, the patron saint of travelers.

Церковь Святого Николая в Батуми

Synagogue of the city of Batumi

The Jewish community of Batumi started building a synagogue at the end of the XIX century. The work was led by architect Semyon Volkovich, who took the synagogues in Amsterdam and The Hague as examples. By 1904, a beautiful building with a snow-white facade, arched windows and towers on the sides was completed. The minimalistic interior with white walls and sky-blue ceiling looks light and bright. During the Soviet years, the synagogue did not work, but now it has been restored and has acquired its original appearance.

Orta Jameh Mosque in the Turkish Quarter

Adjara was part of the Ottoman Empire for more than three centuries, and about a third of the region’s population now professes Islam. In the past, there were three mosques in Batumi. Of these, only one has survived, Orta Jameh, which means “Middle Mosque” — it was located between the other two. The building with a high minaret was completed in 1866. It is quite modest, since it was built at the expense of a local noble family. But the carvings, murals and well-kept park at the entrance are definitely worth attention.

Kutaisi Street, which is the most convenient way to get to the mosque, is called the Turkish Quarter. There are many cafes and restaurants with Turkish cuisine, from where oriental music sounds. The smells and even the architecture are reminiscent of Istanbul. From what you can see in Batumi, the Turkish Quarter and the Orta Jameh Mosque are the best places to explore the Ottoman past of the city.

Europe Square

Concerts, fairs and festivals are often held in the largest city square. Life boils here even after sunset, when the backlight turns on. This is a great place to relax and explore the sights of Batumi. The square is surrounded by ancient and modern houses with unusual architecture, numerous cafes and restaurants. The most interesting objects in Europe Square:

  • A pretty blue fountain with high jets. The coolness and murmur emanating from it help to refresh yourself on a hot day. There are corners of greenery with benches around.
  • The statue of Medea. Surely you remember the myth of Jason, who traveled to Colchis to get the Golden Fleece. In ancient times, western Georgia was called Colchis. The statue depicts the Colchian princess Medea with a golden fleece, a symbol of wealth and prosperity.
  • Astronomical clock. In the eastern part of the square there is an extraordinary clock with gold trim and melodious ringing. If you can figure them out, then along with the exact time you will learn the lunar phase, the position of the sun and other astronomical data.

Batumi Boulevard

The Old Town is far from the only thing to see in Batumi. Another center of attraction for tourists and townspeople is the 7—kilometer Batumi Boulevard, which stretches along the coastline. It is a large recreation area with landscaping, bike paths, cafes, entertainment and modern art objects. Batumi Boulevard can be called the heart of the city — here you can aimlessly walk, chat, play sports and admire the seascapes.

The central entrance to Batumi Boulevard from the sea side is decorated with an elegant white colonnade. Concerts are held near it on summer evenings. It is worth going further, and you will see many more interesting objects:

  • Dancing fountain. There are several light and music fountains in Batumi, but the best of them is located in the southern part of the embankment. When the evening lights turn on, it turns into a fabulous show. High jets of water shimmer with different colors, intertwine and disperse, collapse and soar again. It’s hard to look away from such a sight.
  • The ABC Tower. The 145 m high tower is a monument to Georgian writing and culture. The structure is decorated with letters of the Georgian alphabet, which curl in a double helix like strands of DNA. There is an observation deck upstairs, you can take the elevator up. There is also a bar and a restaurant with panoramic windows in the tower.
  • The House of Justice. Among the sights of Batumi there is something to see from modern architecture. For example, the House of Justice, created by the Italian Michele de Lucchi. The glass structure symbolizes the honesty and transparency of all processes in a public institution. The building was nicknamed the “bottle” for its unusual cylindrical shape with a narrow base.
  • Batumi Lighthouse. At the end of the boulevard stands a 20-meter stone lighthouse, built in 1882. It is still active and signals ships with a red light at night. The lighthouse has a caretaker who protects it from tourists. You can’t go inside, but the white stone structure is worth looking at from the side and taking pictures.

Wonderland Park

At the northern end of Batumi Boulevard there is a park with attractions and a large Ferris wheel. This is one of the best places in Batumi for families with children. The Ferris wheel makes a turn in 15 minutes. A breathtaking view opens from a height of 55 m. The Park of Wonders houses the installation “Ali and Nino”, the ABC Tower and the old lighthouse. There are also a lot of cute and unusual sculptures here, and everyone wants to take a picture. In the park you can eat, buy souvenirs or go on a boat trip from the pier.

The statue of “Ali and Nino”

The sculpture “Ali and Nino” appeared in 2010, it was invented by artist Tamara Kvesitadze. The installation depicts the main characters of the book of the same name by Kurban Said. This is the story of Caucasian Romeo and Juliet — Muslim Ali and Christian Nino. Being in love together is hindered not only by different faiths and nationalities, but also by the troubles of the First World War. This fascinating book is worth reading before a trip to Georgia or during a vacation, it will make the holiday experience more vivid.

The sculpture “Ali and Nino” is ranked among the most memorable sights of Batumi, and indeed of the whole of Georgia. This work of art looks most impressive when the backlight is turned on. In the evenings, futuristic statues of men and women begin to move. In 10 minutes, they slowly come closer at first, then touch in an embrace for a very short time, and then pass through each other and move away. This action conditionally repeats the plot of a tragic novel.

Chachi Tower

In 2012, an elegant 25 m high tower with unusual architecture was built on the embankment. It looks like an ancient clock tower that used to stand here. According to the bold plan of the organizers, chacha, a strong alcoholic drink made from grapes, was supposed to be served free of charge in special bowls at the foot of the tower. At first, it was really possible to try it for free in the evenings. Then the fountain was turned on once a week for 15 minutes. Now there is no free alcohol distribution anymore, but the bright tower with columns and arches is still worthy of attention. And chacha can be ordered in one of the bars.

If you go beyond the Park of Wonders on Batumi Boulevard and go further, you will find yourself in one of the most beautiful places in the city. This is a picturesque park named after the Polish president and his wife. You can come here for a walk and relax in nature at any time of the year.

There are many different plants in the park, for example, magnolias, palms and cypresses. In spring and summer, bright and fragrant flowers bloom in the flower beds. Coolness on hot days is provided by the shade of trees and the jets of fountains. There is a large playground with nets and swings for children, benches and sports facilities for adults. The entrance to the park is decorated with a majestic colonnade in the antique style. It was built in Stalin’s time. There are attractions for kids near the entrance — carousels, steam trains, inflatable slides and trampolines. You can also go to the zoo and dolphinarium with children. The rest of the park is calm and quiet, with walking paths and benches. Lake Nuri is cool on a hot day. Those who wish can go boating or catamarans. In addition to the lake, there is another small pond in the park. This is an unusual fountain that looks like a large and heavy boulder is held in the air only by the force of water jets.

Chavchavadze Drama Theater with a classic colonnade and spectacular night lighting. Even if you don’t go to the performance, it’s worth going inside and taking a look at the permanent exhibition.

The square with benches, flower beds and trimmed green labyrinths is good for walking. Its main decoration is the majestic fountain “Neptune” in the style of the Italian Renaissance. The golden statue of Neptune, raised high on a multi-stage base, is surrounded by a retinue: mermaids and figurines of babies, which symbolize the largest rivers on earth. There is a similar fountain, only without gilding, in Bologna. It was built in the XVI century.

Argo Cable Car

The Batumi cable car is the longest in Georgia, and it takes mind—blowing photos. In 15 minutes, the cabins cover 2.5 km and rise to a height of 2,580 m. Try to find time to get to the 400-meter Sameba Mountain (Troitskaya), where one of the most beautiful temples of Georgia stands. There is an observation deck next to the temple of Tsminda Sameba (Holy Trinity). It is believed that it is from here that the best views of the city and the coast open. It is best to climb the mountain in the morning, when it is quiet and sparsely populated. In the evening, the entire complex closes after business hours.

Holy Spirit Catholic Church

In the late 90s, a strict and ascetic church of the Holy Spirit with large stained glass windows was built for the Catholic community of Batumi. In addition to the stained glass windows, it is decorated with a two-meter silver cross on the roof and a painting inside. The church is located on the outskirts of the city from Tbilisi.

In 1903, a large Catholic cathedral was already being built in Batumi, but it did not operate for very long. Under the USSR, it was confiscated, and later transferred to the Orthodox Church. It is now known as the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Therefore, there was a need for a new temple, the architects of which were Oleg Pataridze and Georgy Bagoshvili. The completed structure was consecrated by Bishop Giuseppe Pasotto, representing the Roman Catholic Church in the Caucasus.

The Church of the Holy Spirit is worth seeing for its stylish and unusual architecture. But if you find yourself here on Sunday at 17:00, be sure to listen to the festive service.

Marine station and port

East of Batumi Boulevard is the port of Batumi and the marine station — an interesting place for those who love ships and maritime romance. The sky-blue station was built in the middle of the last century. It is a worthy example of the Stalinist Empire style with columns, arches and a tall spire. The port began operation in 1878 and remains the deepest in Georgia. It includes 11 berths, there is a marina for international tourist liners. New ships arrive daily — cargo, passenger and military. The port and the marine station look especially good in the early morning and after sunset, when the lights turn on.

Until 1917, the Nobels owned a large plot of land at the entrance to the city. A beautiful two-storey house and an office of entrepreneurs, nicknamed the “Oil Kings”, were built on it.

Others are 100 km or more away, they are suitable for day trips or longer trips. Let’s tell you about the most beautiful and interesting places.

Sibiryakov’s abandoned villa in Makhinjauri (6 km)

Konstantin Sibiryakov was a prosperous Irkutsk gold miner. His family owned mines, factories, and a railroad. Only one thing prevented a happy life: Sibiryakov’s mother and brother died of consumption, and his wife and daughter suffered from the same disease. Wanting to save his loved ones, he moved to warm Batumi and built a cottage on Cape Kara-Dere. It did not save his wife and daughter, but the widowed Sibiryakov did not go anywhere. He was engaged in charity work and did a lot for Batumi.

A few years later, Konstantin Sibiryakov remarried, and a son and two daughters were born in a new marriage. But the land and villa were confiscated after the revolution, and the family was separated from his father. In Soviet times, the villa was occupied by a sanatorium, but now the building is abandoned. There are ruins of it, which, however, can be judged by its architecture and former beauty. A park with tropical plants has been preserved around, and a beautiful seascape is visible from the cape.

Batumi Botanical Garden (8 km)

Not far from the northern outskirts of Batumi there is a large botanical garden, one of the best in diversity in Europe. It opened in 1912, and trees were planted 30 years before that. More than 5,000 species of plants are collected here. It will take at least three hours to see them all. It is possible to go for a 1.5-hour walk with a guide. In addition to the Caucasian and Mediterranean flora, plants from Tibet and the Himalayas, Japan and both Americas are represented in the garden, there are Australian and New Zealand samples. One of the tasks of the botanical garden was to adapt subtropical plants to the conditions of Adjara and southern Russia. Sustainable varieties of tea, Japanese sakura and some citrus fruits were obtained here.

The Botanical Garden is located on a hill with a beautiful view of Batumi and the Black Sea. This is a great place for a summer vacation. It is cool here, and the sea breeze mixes with the aromas of roses, eucalyptus and coniferous plants.

Roman Fortress in Gonio (15 km)

15 km south of Batumi there is the resort village of Gonio, and in it there are the ruins of the oldest fortress in the country. It was built during the Roman Empire and dates back to the 1st century AD. It is believed that the biblical apostle Matthew was buried here. The internal structures were poorly preserved, but five-meter walls with towers remained. Excavations are underway on the territory, during which artifacts much older than the fortress itself are discovered. An hour is enough to explore the ruins and a small museum. The rest of the time can be spent on the beach. It is sandy here, cleaner and more secluded than in Batumi. There is also a seafood restaurant in Gonio.

Machakhela National Park (20 km)

To explore the amazing nature of Adjara, it is worth a trip to one of the national parks. The largest of them is located just 20 km from Batumi. Here, outdoor enthusiasts will find untouched mountain slopes, forests, rivers, a waterfall, a lake with cold water, tall trees and flowering glades. At the beginning of the route, tourists cross the river in a manually operated cabin. To activate the mechanism, you need to turn the wheel yourself. Further, there are regular signs on the way, so that even in the case of an independent trip, no one will get lost.

Национальный парк Мтирала

Mahuntseti Waterfall and Queen Tamara Bridge (32 km)

There are many waterfalls and bridges in Adjara, but these are more famous than others. Natural and man—made attractions are located close to each other, and there are beautiful mountain landscapes around. The bridge was built in the XIII century in the time of Queen Tamara, then many such structures were built. It is made of fragments of local rocks, the architecture is the simplest. And yet the stones, held by their own weight, have remained intact for many centuries. Neither time nor earthquakes have destroyed this bridge, nor others like it.

The Mahuntseti Waterfall is 400 m from the bridge. It turns out to be very beautiful in photographs, especially in spring and autumn, when it becomes more full-flowing. But in summer you can refresh yourself in a stone bowl, where water jets fall from a 40-meter height. On the way from the bridge to the waterfall there are kebab shops, souvenir shops and tents with traditional sweets. Picnic areas are also provided.

Gomis Mta Mountain Village (82 km)

There is a small village on a mountain slope 80 km from Batumi, which has hardly been touched by modern civilization. There is no electricity, gas or running water, even communication works only in some places. The name of this village means “Gomi Mountain”. The height of the settlement is 2,100 m above sea level. Once here, it’s as if you will ascend to heaven and see clouds far below your feet. If desired, you can climb another 300 m to the Chinchao Mountain Lake.

There is amazing nature in the vicinity of Gomis Mta — pine groves, mineral springs, fluffy snow seven months a year. There are plans to make a resort and hold a cable car. Until these plans come to fruition, there are practically no conditions for long-term accommodation. But the area remains untouched and sparsely populated, so this is a great option for a day trip or a few days’ outdoor recreation.

Горная деревня Гомис Мта в облаках

Martville Canyon (147 km)

A two-hour drive from Batumi there is a surprisingly picturesque canyon with a depth of 50-70 m, formed by the Abasha River. It was named after the town of Martvili, located 20 km away. The 2.5 km long canyon is divided into two parts. The upper one is suitable for a quiet rafting trip, which lasts about 20 minutes, and you can walk along the lower one. In the canyon you will see overhanging rocks with dense vines, waterfalls and shoals. There are viewing platforms with incredible views in the lower part. Additional interest to this place is given by the finds of paleontologists. They indicate that in the distant past, primitive people and long-extinct animals, including dinosaurs, lived here.

Since the Abasha River always remains cold, you can find coolness and freshness in the Martville Canyon even on the hottest day. But there are a lot of tourists here in the summer, because the attraction has become very popular in recent years. There are few vacationers in spring and autumn, but you need to dress warmly.

Okatse Canyon (159 km)

Very close to the Martville Canyon there is another picturesque canyon formed by the stormy Okatse River. It is located in a protected area, so the route to it begins with a visit to the visitor center. From there, you need to walk 2.5 km along a forest trail, and then the most interesting thing begins. A narrow suspension bridge with a length of 780 m has been built along one of the walls of the canyon. It ends with an observation deck with a beautiful view. The height here exceeds 100 m.
