1. Maiden Tower

The unique and mysterious monument of ancient architecture has been preserved to our time in excellent condition and today is actually a symbol of the city. The height of the tower reaches 28 meters (8 tiers). You can climb the walls using a spiral staircase.
Scientists are arguing about the age of the structure, suggesting dates from the I century AD to the IX. Stones and mortar give different results in laboratories. A plaque on the wall indicates the 12th century. The safety of the walls can be explained by their thickness. At the base, the thickness is 5 meters, and by the top it is reduced to only 4 meters. There is a well inside the tower, for which the builders had to break through the rock 21 meters deep.
They cannot come up with an explanation of the destination of this landmark in Baku. There are no conditions for long-term residence, it cannot be attributed with certainty to any religious direction. Maybe that’s why there are so many legends and tales about the structure in Azerbaijan. It is only known that in the XII century it was used as a citadel in the defense of the Baku fortress, in the XII-XIX centuries it played the role of a lighthouse, and since 1964 a museum has been organized within its walls, which is still in operation. 2. Azerbaijan Carpet Museum

What to see in Baku, if not to delight the eyes – the famous Azerbaijani carpets! It was in this country that the world’s first Carpet Museum was opened, where a unique collection of national carpet art was collected, the technique of creating, preserving and interrelating the carpet with other types of national art was studied.
The first exhibition was opened in the ancient fortress of Icherishahar, which was located on the territory of Baku. Since it was located on the site of a mosque, in 1992 the Museum had to move to another building (the former Lenin Museum). The authorities supported the work of the scientists in every possible way, and in 2008 construction began on a modern building that allows the collected samples to be kept in proper conditions. 4. The Shirvanshahs’ Palace

This palace can be safely attributed to the best sights of Azerbaijan. The ancient residence of the rulers of Azerbaijan was built over four hundred years, starting from the XII century. The complex includes:

The building is located on a hill, it was previously surrounded by walls, but they have long been destroyed. Due to political unrest and wars, the palace was rebuilt several times, periodically fell into an abandoned state and was restored again. It is believed that it originally had 52 rooms and 3 spiral staircases. Today, museum exhibition halls are located here, and the rich national attractions of Baku emphasize the amazing masonry walls and piers.

5. Bibi-Eibat Mosque

There is a Bibi-Eibat mosque near Baku in the village of Shikhov. Unlike most of the country’s cultural monuments, the fate of this one is quite tragic. The large and unique temple was built in the XIII century, and since then has served as a place of prayer for sheikhs and many famous Muslims of the country.
During the coming of Soviet power, under the auspices of the fight against religion, the temple was destroyed. The main part fell only after the third explosion in 1920. The culprit of the abuse of the ancient architectural monument was punished, but it did not help the mosque. For many years, a highway passed through this place, and transport passed through the burial sites.
Already in the 80s, the question of restoring the building began to be raised. All the preserved materials – photos, paintings, drawings, etc. – have been raised to help recreate the unique temple. Using them, Sanan Sultanov built a modern version of the mosque. All possible techniques of canonical architecture were used, and additions appeared – 2 side minarets. Outside, the walls are decorated with patterns of masonry, inside there are green and turquoise mirrors under the domes. The texts of the Koran are written in gold on them. The walls are decorated with ornaments in traditional styles based on the works of architect Fakhraddin Miralai. Today, the mosque is one of the main attractions of Baku.
6. Tezepir Mosque

A relatively young building, the Tezepir Mosque has become a favorite place not only for local believers, but also for tourists looking for something to see in Baku.
Architect Ziver bek Akhmedbekov built the temple relatively quickly, in 1905-1914. This is due to the generous donations of Nabat Khanum Ashurbekova and her son, representatives of a well-known family. Today, the building is included in the sights of Baku. It occupies 1400 square meters and is lavishly decorated with oriental-style ornaments. The prayer hall for men is illuminated by 52 chandeliers, and the women’s part is built of pistachio wood. The windows and doors in the building were created by experienced cabinetmakers. Even the floor is equipped with a modern heating system.
But it wasn’t always like that. Upon the arrival of Soviet power, the mosque was not destroyed, but it was clearly not used for its intended purpose. After being a cinema and even a barn, the building became a temple again in 1943.
7. Absheron National Park

The park was officially opened in 2005. In fact, its basis is the Abshiron State Nature Reserve, which is part of the city of Baku. The park allows you to maintain the ecological state of the environment in the city at a high level and at the same time performs environmental protection functions. When choosing what to visit in Baku, you should definitely include the Absheron National Park in your program. Animals and birds, which are rarely found in nature, are little afraid of people here, and some can be seen on a regular walk. The gazelle is an amazingly beautiful gazelle, which, with a length of more than a meter, weighs only up to 33 kg. But jackals are harder to find. Their population is significant, as well as foxes, but they go out into space at night and practically merge with the night shadows.
Among the birds, the most unique are the silver gull, marsh harrier, red-headed ducks, snuffling swan and others. It can take a long time to list them, but it is better to see such natural sights of Baku with your own eyes.
8. Icheri Sheher or the “old” city

Since 1977, the entire territory of Icheri Sheher has been recognized as a historical and architectural reserve, and there are reasons for this. This area was inhabited back in the Bronze Age, and it is here that the most ancient architectural sights of Baku are located. About 1,300 families still live among the ancient fortress walls along the three main streets.
Residential buildings are also located in small alleys, dead ends, along which it is so interesting to just walk at a leisurely pace. 9. Ateshgah in Baku

The altar is located in the middle of the courtyard, in the quadrangular main temple, open to all sides of the world. Above the entrance there is a balakhana, a guest room. For a long time, Sikhs, Hindus and Zoroastrians came to the altar to pay their respects, and today more than 15,000 tourists go to the temple every year, and among what to see in Baku, the temple is certainly among the first.
10. Central Botanical Garden

The sights of Baku are perfectly complemented by the Central Botanical Park, which since its creation (1937) has managed to collect and cultivate several thousand different woody and herbaceous plants. Among them, more than 2,000 belong to the Azerbaijani flora, 12 species are classified as “under threat of destruction”.
Not all plants grow outdoors. Some of them require special care, which allows you to create an indoor greenhouse for them. Some areas are occupied by flowers and citrus fruits, and part of the area is reserved for a forest park. Three reservoirs at once allow you to grow aquatic plants, which can only be admired in a rare area.
What to see in Baku, visiting the botanical park, you can find. After all, about 16 hectares of cultivated areas will have to be explored. The territory is located in the foothills, at the Institute of Botany, and is the base for various studies and experiments.

11. Baku Ferris Wheel

The attraction can be seen far away, which is not surprising – the height of the wheel is exactly 60 m. This is twice as high as the previous version. It looks especially beautiful at night, illuminated by bright multicolored lights around its entire circumference.
A modern miracle was built by the Dutch. Throughout the year, Dutch Wheels has been mounting and testing a new Ferris wheel. In 2014, it was opened in the spring by Ilham Aliyev, the President of Azerbaijan. It has several speeds that allow you to change the turnaround time within 10-30 minutes. There are 30 booths for visitors, each of them can accommodate no more than 8 people.
The Ferris Wheel is located in the Seaside Park, not far from the National flag Square. It is easy to see many of the sights of Baku from it.
12. Baku Zoo

It’s nice to see animals that have a free life. Large aviaries, natural greenery around create the impression of free living, which both animals and visitors like. Today, the Baku Zoo is the largest in the country and occupies 4.25 hectares.
It wasn’t always like that. After the zoo opened in 1928, many difficult events awaited, including reorganization, when in 1942, during the Second World War, the Rostov zoo had to be taken over. Until 1958, it occupied a small park. Further, in the village of Bailovo outside the city, during a landslide, rare animals died, and after that the animals were transported to their current location, which happened only in 1985.
Today, pink flamingos, which were rescued by employees in the 1990s, have become the symbol of the zoo. Already 28 species of rare birds have found their home in the Baku Zoo. Among the things to visit in Baku is the square, where 160 species of animals, numbering about 1200, live at once. And the development does not stop there. A project has already been created for the construction of a new zoo outside the city. The territory of 230 hectares will be settled, the animals will accept Australian rare animals and birds into their circle.
13. Baku Seaside Boulevard

For travelers who are interested in the coastal landscape of Baku, the sea in all its splendor will open from the Primorsky City Boulevard. On one side of the boulevard there are wonderful views of the Caspian Sea embankment, on the other side there is a magnificent park with a musical fountain, where concerts, street exhibitions are held and where locals and guests of the city love to walk along the water. Sprawling trees, shady shrubs and other ornamental vegetation grow in the park along the boulevard, including exotic cacti and baobabs. Of particular interest is a 75-meter-high parachute tower with original lighting. Other attractions include a system of artificial canals called Little Venice, a carpet museum with a million original items, and a 60-meter Ferris wheel.
14. National Flag Square

A significant place for the whole country is located near the base of the Azerbaijani Navy – the National Flag Square, with a flag hoisted in the center, which depicts the coat of arms of the republic and a map of Azerbaijan made of gilded bronze. This place can be called a relatively new attraction, which opened in 2010 in the suburb of Bailovo. The place for the square was chosen for a reason – it is from here that the flag is viewed from anywhere in the city, this is facilitated by the world’s tallest 162-meter flagpole and 70-meter flag. The whole structure weighs more than two hundred tons. In 2012, the Baku Crystal Hall was erected on the square, the walls of which are made in the form of luminous crystals, creating an impressive architectural illumination. Another notable object is the Museum of the National Flag in the form of an 8-pointed star, where medals, orders, flags and other historical attributes are exhibited.
15. Fountain Square

Having 5 days in Baku at your disposal, you should pay attention to the Fountain Square, located in the very center — you will not have to go far. Even in pre-revolutionary times, a vast wasteland was formed in Baku, where since 1806 they wanted to equip a place and build an Orthodox church, a Folk theater, and an Orthodox church, but eventually in 1856 they stopped at creating a park. There are really a lot of fountains here – some of a classic look, others of a modern and creative form. There are also notable structures – for example, a caravanserai, within the walls of which there is a museum of Azerbaijani literature, or an ancient Armenian church. Together with Aziz Aliyev and Nizami Streets, the square forms a single pedestrian quarter. For convenience, reconstruction was carried out in 2010 – new benches, stalls, lanterns were installed, and the square became the face of a new modern part of Baku.
16. Flame Towers

The tallest buildings in Azerbaijan are the Flame Towers, a complex of three buildings that, despite their visual identity, have different heights – the tallest one soared 190 meters, each subsequent one 20-30 meters lower than the previous one. The most beautiful view of the towers opens at night, when the backlight lights up and the structures seem to come to life, turning into dancing flames. From a distance, all this splendor looks like a giant bonfire raging on the western hill of Baku and illuminating the surroundings with a reddish glow. Today, office and residential premises are located inside the towers, as well as a chic modern hotel. The entire complex was under construction for about 5 years and was completed by 2012. To admire the most impressive views of the “burning” towers, you can look into the Sky Opera Club, located in a skyscraper in the city center.
17. Juma Mosque

For those who are interested in the architectural sights of Baku, the presentation offers another unusual structure — the 12th-century Juma Mosque, located on one of the streets of the old city of Icheri Sheher. This is an excellent example of the splendor of Oriental mosques, beautiful in their traditional and at the same time exquisite beauty. The stylistic design of the mosque is typical of typical medieval buildings in Azerbaijan: the carved facade with a colonnade is amazingly decorated with wooden and stone patterns, and the interior is decorated with tiled stones, old inscriptions with quotations from the Koran, made in the style of Arabic script, are emblazoned on the pastel walls. Today, every Friday at noon, people in peculiar Muslim robes flock to the entrance to the temple – these are members of the Shiite community who gather for joint prayer.

The Heydar Mosque is a real religious symbol of the city, located in the Binagadi district and bearing the name of former President of the Republic Heydar Aliyev, a charismatic, revered by the Azerbaijani people. At one time, he made a significant contribution to the development of the state and national identity. The solemn opening of the shrine took place quite recently – in 2014, the head of state himself participated in the ceremony. The mosque, along with the surrounding territories, occupies 12 thousand square meters, the area of the structure itself is also impressive – more than 4 thousand square meters. The facade of the building is covered with a special stone in the Shirvan-Absheron style, the minarets rise 95 meters, the height of the central dome is 55 meters. The interior is decorated with designer decor, the dome is covered with quotations from the Holy Quran.

Speaking about the architectural features of Baku, it cannot be said that the appearance of the city is characterized by a certain style that unites buildings into a single whole. In the very heart of the city, for example, there is a building in the French Gothic style that is not at all typical for the capital – the Mukhtarov Palace, built at the beginning of the last century at the expense of the millionaire oilman Murtuza Mukhtarov. Impressed by the Venetian architecture during a trip to Europe, the oil magnate decided to build his own Venetian palace. But in the end, the mansion turned out to look more like a medieval Gothic temple than an Italian palazzo. Nowadays, the wedding palace works within the walls of the castle, and the interior is distinguished by splendor and elaboration of every detail, there is a predominance of neo-Gothic elements with an admixture of modernity and classicism.
20. National Museum of Arts of Azerbaijan

The largest art museum in the republic is the National Museum, which houses more than 17 thousand exhibits – masterpieces of art. The museum was opened in the 40s in honor of the famous artist R. Mustafayev. The collection of the museum grew out of the collection of art objects collected by the previously existing Azerbaijan State Museum. The Museum of Modern Art, opened in 2009 by the wife of the head of Azerbaijan, M. Aliyeva, is one of the most youth cultural institutions in the country. Particularly noteworthy is the creative approach to the design of the building, in the layout of which the principle of free space is implemented – this can be traced in architecture, where there are no corners, walls have different slopes, open passages are located everywhere, there are no rigid frames and any restrictions. Once it all started with a private collection of Z.Salakhova is the sister of the talented artist T. Alakhov. Traveling around the world, she collected small books everywhere, spending a total of about 30 years on this activity. Today, this collection has chosen its place in the museum and has grown to 6.5 thousand books imported from more than 60 countries. The museum was opened in 2012, and today its exposition includes samples of Azerbaijani literature, works by foreign authors – Nizami Ganjavi, Vagif, Nasimi, there is even a Bible and the Koran.

The Russian Drama Theater in Azerbaijan appeared in 1920 on the basis of two theater groups at once – one of them was the liquidated Momus group, the second was the split Bat collective. Initially, it was a satire-propaganda theater, and its repertoire included satirical plays, dance performances, various humorous dramatizations – such works of drama as “Gadfly”, “Lake Lyul”, “Bear Wedding” enjoyed particular success in the early years. 28. Nagorny Park

One of the best examples of landscape gardening in the city is the Upland Park, which stretches in the heart of the city above the waters of the bay. It consists of territories consisting of observation decks, park areas and a memorial complex. The construction of the park began in 1935 – the chief architect Ilyin very successfully and competently used the natural features of the local landscape, laying a number of sites on natural hills for viewing the surroundings. In 1960, a funicular began operating in the park – it is he who delivers park visitors to the observation decks. Another interesting object of the park is the Green Theater, a stage where local and foreign pop stars still perform today. Since 1982, the Gulistan Palace, listed as a monument of national heritage, has also been located in these territories.
29. Alley of the Shahids

The upper part of the Nagorny Park in Baku is known for the Alley of the Shahids, infamous as the mass grave, in which heroes who fought for the independence of their country in 1990 are buried. They became victims of the so-called “Black January” – the events on the January night of 1990, when a rally was held against the background of the political opposition and the Kabakh conflict, which it was decided to stop by force – 126 people died. These Azerbaijanis are buried in the Nagorny Park, which was previously called Kirov Park. Previously, there was a Muslim cemetery on the site of the Alley, but in 1920 it was destroyed by the Bolsheviks. Since 1990, people from all over the country have flocked to Shahid Alley every year to honor the memory of national heroes. At 12 p.m. on January 20, all enterprises of the city and transport stop their work, car and ship signals are heard everywhere, flags are lowered as a sign of mourning.
30. Hagani Garden

A number of well-maintained parks with developed infrastructure, many cafes and restaurants, attractions and playgrounds – all this is another facet of modern Baku. The photo of the Hagani garden reflects the original landscape layout, the central place of which is occupied by a non-standard shaped pool decorated with the sculpture “Three Graces” in the form of elegant statues of women on a stone pedestal. The colonnade of the garden pavilion runs from the pool, and the paths of the park are arranged so that they all pass diagonally through the park, necessarily skirting the central element – the pool. Many citizens like to relax in the cozy atmosphere of the garden, in the wide shade of green spaces. This small park was created back in the 19th century, next to the area where particularly wealthy people lived. During subsequent reconstructions, the garden was supplemented with many architectural forms, and it received its name from the name of Khagani Aliyev.
