The new Russian ambassador to Indonesia, Sergei Tolchenov, said that direct flights from Russia to Bali have not yet been launched because Indonesian companies are afraid of secondary US sanctions. At the same time, Russian airlines, as already stated, are ready to start flights.
“The whole issue now rests on the fact that the local side cannot yet create the conditions necessary for the reception and maintenance of Russian aircraft. We are talking about both refueling and the ability to make payments – for fuel, other airport services, including ticket sales. There is a feeling that Indonesian companies and banks that are involved in this process are still afraid of secondary Western sanctions,” the diplomat said in an interview with RIA Novosti.
He added that the Russian side is waiting for the Indonesian authorities to take “concrete steps” to solve these problems. Sergey Tolchenov did not specify which ones. At the same time, Jakarta has repeatedly expressed its interest in resuming direct flights.
At the end of May, Indonesian Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Sandiaga Uno said that direct flights from Russia to Bali could appear as early as this year. At the same time, work on the restoration of direct flights has been going on for 2 years. In particular, Aeroflot and Rossiya announced the start of ticket sales back in 2023, but non-stop flights have not been launched. Currently, you can only get to Bali with transfers. The most convenient options are offered by Emirates and Qatar Airways – with connections in Dubai or Doha (Qatar).
