Expert: The Palace of Westminster is on the verge of destruction

Эксперт: Вестминстерский дворец находится на грани разрушения

According to the Financial Times, the Palace of Westminster in London is on the verge of destruction.

According to Tristram Hunt, director of the Victoria and Albert Museum, the building where the British Parliament is located has a damp smell, contains asbestos, rodents, damaged masonry and outdated electrical wiring. And in general, there is a “general atmosphere of disgusting decomposition.”

He recalled that in 2012, an examination showed that the building needed “fundamental reconstruction.” The repair could take from six to 12 years and would have cost the authorities 3.5 — 13 billion pounds, but it never started.

Hunt called on Parliament to take an early decision on the restoration of the palace. It could be repaired for the 200th anniversary of the fire that occurred in 1834, as a result of which the building was damaged.
