“I can’t sleep on the plane, it’s just agony…” one of the subscribers wrote in the chat of the telegram channel “Roof of the Tourist House”. Her case is not unique: many people cannot close their eyes even at night or during a long flight.
We invited tourists to share the secrets of how they manage to sleep in the air. It turned out that some people use sleeping pills, others use hot drinks, and others avoid cheap fares: “First class, business. Private jet… The rest is not rest.” However, many people manage to get comfortable even in the economy class cabin – for example, they take up two seats to “curl up”. Or they lie down on the floor: “I usually fly with my family and go down between the chairs under my feet, since my size allows it.” And some people have a whole “travel sleep kit”: “For long flights, I take a pillow around my neck, a pillow under my lower back, a large inflatable pillow under my feet, compression socks and plenty of water.”
Professionals also shared their life hacks. If you need to get enough sleep, they recommend taking a window seat – you can lean against the wall there, and the neighbors won’t bother you if they need to go out. At the same time, it is better to avoid rows near the toilet and kitchen – it is always noisy there.
“Dress comfortably: soft, loose clothing and a layered version are best suited so that you can adjust to the temperature in the cabin,” says former flight attendant Yulia Petrushkova. – Do not overeat before the flight, as heavy food makes it difficult to fall asleep. You can warn the flight attendants in advance so that you are not woken up during the distribution of food, but leave a set with food.”
And in addition to neck pillows, which tourists often carry with them, you can also take an eye mask, earplugs or noise–canceling headphones – all this will help create comfortable conditions for relaxation.
