Достопримечательности Чехии: Топ-35

Prague Castle Castle Complex

One of the most important sights of the Czech Republic, which has literally become a symbol of the state, is the largest castle Prague Castle, located in Prague. It is a complex of buildings, temples and fortifications surrounding the main squares and courtyards of the city. This is a whole area of the city, quite large in area, which performs a cultural, historical and political role. Previously, the castle served as the residence of Czech kings and emperors, today it plays the role of the representative office of the president of the country. The residence is guarded by a large military unit consisting of six hundred guards of the City. Every hour there is a changing of the guard, and at noon this action is even accompanied by a special orchestra. Guests of the city specially come to the walls of the complex in order to watch this solemn ceremony.

Nowadays, Prague Castle has become one of the most visited tourist sites in the city. Visitors are allowed into the ceremonial halls of the palace complex only twice a year — on May 8 (Liberation Day) and October 28 (the day of the founding of the republic.)

2. Charles Bridge (Prague)

Достопримечательности Чехии: Топ-35

Charles Bridge is the business card of the Czech Republic

Speaking of what to visit in the Czech Republic in the first place, special attention should be paid to the Charles Bridge, which has become a real business card of the country in our time. By the way, there are 18 bridges in the Czech capital that conceal a rich history, but undoubtedly the oldest and most beautiful among them is the Charles Bridge. In addition to its direct function — connecting the opposite banks of the Vltava River, this bridge has occupied an important place in the history of the city. The bridge was conceived by the Czech King Charles IV, opened in 1402, since then it has undergone some changes — a horse-drawn road ran along it, trams traveled for a long time, but now the bridge has become pedestrian again, which attracts many tourists and is a favorite place for walking.

The history of the bridge is shrouded in numerous legends, and one of the favorite beliefs among modern residents and visitors is that the bridge has a favorable energy, and there are several special places on the bridge where visitors make cherished wishes.

3. Wenceslas Square (Prague)

Достопримечательности Чехии: Топ-35

Wenceslas Square – the heart of Prague

While traveling in Prague, you will not have to think about what to see in the Czech Republic — sooner or later, accidentally or intentionally, you will still find yourself in the very heart of the city — on Wenceslas Square. Here, even in the middle of the night, hundreds of people are walking and hurrying somewhere, luring countless shops and restaurants with their signs.

Once there was a horse market on the site of Wenceslas Square, but since 1848, after the anti-Habsburg uprising took place here, this territory has become a place where crowds gathered on memorable dates:

in 1918, the people celebrated liberation from imperial oppression here; in 1948, the workers demanded that power be given to the communes; in 1989, on the contrary, a large crowd demanded that the Communists give up power.

Today, guests of the city find themselves on this square in order to visit local memorable places, and residents gather here to celebrate the victory of the national team in the hockey championship, drink beer in the nearest pub. Both invariably meet on Wenceslas Square, so that they can go about their business again.

4. St. Vitus Cathedral (Prague)

Достопримечательности Чехии: Топ-35

St. Vitus Cathedral is a pearl of European Gothic

If you ask yourself what is one of the most important sights of the Czech Republic, then any local resident will not hesitate to answer that this is St. Vitus Cathedral – one of the most important attractions not only in Prague, but throughout the state. This is a truly grandiose and monumental structure, the first stone of which was laid in the middle of the 14th century, and the last stage of construction was completed only in the middle of the last century. For many centuries, the coronations of Czech kings were held here, royal weddings were celebrated, and high-ranking personalities of the country were seen off on their last journey. Real masters of their craft have been working on the construction of the Cathedral from century to century. The majestic structure embodying a mixture of two styles — Gothic and Baroque, rises sedately above old Prague, resting its pointed spires directly into the sky. By the way, the tallest towers of the cathedral reach a height of hundreds of meters, which is why the Cathedral building can be easily observed from almost any corner of the Czech capital.

5. Strahov Monastery (Prague)

Достопримечательности Чехии: Топ-35

The Strahov Monastery in Prague

If you explore the lands of the Czech capital from the Petrshinsky hill and go down towards the historical district — Hradcany, then the further path will lie to one of the most beautiful buildings — the Strahov monastery. This is also one of the oldest sights of the Czech Republic, the foundation of which dates back to 1140.

The very name “Strahovsky” speaks for itself — once the hill itself was called Strahovsky, since an outpost was located here to protect the approaches to old Prague. The monastery itself was originally built of wood, so in 1258, as a result of a terrible fire, almost all of its buildings burned to the ground. Years later, the monastery was restored, but over the centuries it burned and was destroyed more than once as a result of wars and civil strife. The monastery was restored time after time, and its architectural styles changed with the change of epochs. Its last “reincarnation” took place in the 18th century, and the appearance in which the monastery appears before us now corresponds to the Baroque style popular at that time, which is characterized by solemnity, an abundance of flexible and smooth lines, richness of external and internal decoration.

6. Lednice Castle (50 km from Brno)

Достопримечательности Чехии: Топ-35

Lednice Castle with a park

Each section of a small state is replete with architectural, historical, and cultural sites. And what to see in the Czech Republic if you find yourself in the south of the country, on the border with Austria? Of course, first of all it is Lednice Castle, which is part of the large Lednice-Valtice complex, one of the most important sights of the Czech Republic. This complex, which once belonged to the Liechtenstein family, was included in the UNESCO Cultural Heritage List in 1996.

Lednice Castle was built back in 1222, but it acquired its modern appearance much later, only in the 18th century, thanks to the works of architect Georg Wingelmuller. After the reconstruction, the complex acquired an architectural appearance in the romanticism style.

If you find yourself in this amazing place, there are a lot of interesting things waiting for you:

stunning interiors — carved ceilings and stairs, marble fireplaces, antique furniture; a large greenhouse on the right side of the castle, full of rare plants and flowers from warm countries; a large-scale park with rare species of trees stretching around the castle; the 60-meter Gardmouth minaret, which was previously used as a watchtower; many rare species of birds, living in the surrounding protected reservoirs.

7. Chocolate Museum (Prague)

Достопримечательности Чехии: Топ-35

The exposition of the “sweet” museum

Chocolate lovers and real chocolate gourmets will definitely find something to visit in the Czech Republic, because in the very heart of the Czech capital, not far from the Old Town Square, there is another unique attraction of the Czech Republic – the “sweet” chocolate museum. It is known that the Czechs treat this delicacy with special respect and consider chocolate a symbol of friendship and positive attitude towards the person who is honored with such a treat. It is thanks to such selfless love and reverence for chocolate that one of the world’s best museums was created. Despite the “young” age of the museum, because it was opened in 2008, today a huge number of visitors flock here. Everyone who wants to plunge into the world of chocolate comes here, learn about its rich history, which dates back about 2,600 years, as well as taste various types of cocoa bean treats.

In general, the chocolate museum is divided into several parts:

in the first one, you can learn about the history of the cocoa drink and its first appearance in Europe; in the second, you can learn the details of the origin and development of chocolate production; in the third, you can see interesting historical chocolate wrappers from different times.

8. Koneprussian caves (30 km from Prague)

Достопримечательности Чехии: Топ-35

The world of bizarre stalactites and stalagmites in the Koneprusskaya cave

In the central part of the country, 30 kilometers from Prague, there is an interesting natural attraction of the Czech Republic — the Koneprussian caves, which today are the largest cave complex in the country. The caves got their name from the area in which they are located — Koneprussi.

What is this natural object? The Koneprussian caves are a whole world of multi—tiered caves full of bizarre stalactites and stalagmites, with a total length of about 2 kilometers and a tourist route 600 meters long. At the same time, the height between the top and bottom tiers in some places reaches 70 meters.

Regardless of the temperature and weather conditions outside, the caves have their own microclimate — almost 100% humidity, the average temperature is kept at +10 ° C. The whole tour of the caves is long, it takes about 2 hours, so you should dress warmly.

Now the entire tourist route in the caves has been landscaped — lighting is working, concrete paths, stairs, railings have been laid, information boards have been installed.

9. Smradeh Nature Reserve (Marianske Lazne)

Достопримечательности Чехии: Топ-35

Smradeh Nature Reserve is a place of unique mineral springs

The sights of the Czech Republic are diverse and unique, and one of them, near the resort town of Marianske Lazne, was created by nature itself. An extensive forest complex, in the vastness of which there is a natural reservoir filled with mineral waters and natural gases, has acquired the name Smradeh. The principle of choosing such a name becomes clear already during a visit to these places: as a result of the formation of hydrogen sulfide accumulations in local reservoirs, a characteristic smell is formed, which cannot be called pleasant. Hence the name, consonant with the unpleasant smell, or stench, that has spread throughout the reserve.

Special attention should be paid to some of the features of the reserve, which arose as a result of the unique geological properties of this territory:

rare plants of higher species grow; there are a large number of springs, which are fed from about 40 springs; from observation decks there is a view of mud volcanoes located on the territory of the reserve.

10. The Royal Belvedere Palace (Prague)

Достопримечательности Чехии: Топ-35

The elegant summer Palace of Queen Anne

The historical and cultural heritage of the Czech capital is distinguished by the amazing richness and variety of Czech sights. If your route runs through Prague, you will not have to look for what to see in the Czech Republic, but on the contrary, you will have to choose from the mass of tourist sites those that are worth visiting first of all. Among such places is the summer palace of Queen Anne, also called the Royal Belvedere Palace.

The palace was founded in 1538 and was intended as a gift for Queen Anne by her loving husband, Ferdinand of Habsburg. Unfortunately, the Queen never received this gift, as she died after the birth of her fifteenth child. The construction of the complex continued until 1541, after which work had to be stopped due to severe fires in the city, and construction was completed only by 1861.

The palace is a 2-storey building decorated in Renaissance style.

The luxury of its architecture and exterior decor deserves special attention:

along the upper part of its walls there is a wide 80 cm edging, painted with ornaments; the building itself is surrounded by an arcade of 36 columns with Tuscan capitals along the perimeter; on the second floor there is a ballroom and a gallery; the building is crowned by an interesting roof, resembling the keel of a ship.

Sights of the Czech Republic: what else to visit while in the Czech Republic

Excursions in the Czech Republic do not always bring the expected pleasure, and the main reason is the lack of understanding of what a tourist would like to see. Our list of the most beautiful and historically important places will solve this problem – you can easily choose what is more interesting to you and you will not waste time and money in vain.

11. Dancing building (Prague)

Достопримечательности Чехии: Топ-35

Ginger and Fred is the architectural embodiment of dance

An interesting architectural monument in the deconstructivist style has become one of the most popular attractions in the Czech Republic. This is a Dancing house dedicated to a pair of famous Broadway dancers who once shone in the Czech Republic. According to the outlines, the building really resembles a man and a woman frozen in a dance: one of the parts of the building, having a more strict outline and slightly expanded upwards, repeats the outline of a male figure, the second, more flexible and expanded downwards, repeats a female silhouette with a skirt fluttering in motion.

The building of an unusual shape was erected here not so long ago — in the 90s of the last century. Previously, there was an ordinary residential building on the site of the creative creation of architecture, which was destroyed due to the bombing by American aircraft, and the ruins remained at this place until the 1960s.

Today, the Dancing House is essentially an office center, and on its top floor there is a restaurant with a beautiful view of the city, and in 2016 a hotel with 21 rooms and an excellent panoramic view also opened here.

12. Thermal springs (Karlovy Vary)

Достопримечательности Чехии: Топ-35

Thermal spring

Those who want to improve their health do not have to think about what to visit in the Czech Republic — of course, first of all they should see the world-famous Karlovy Vary resort. Mineral water from thermal springs here plays a fundamental role in spa treatment. The resort has 13 thermal springs, of which 12 are used for treatment and wellness.

Once, about 600 years ago, at the time of the birth of the spa business in Karlovy Vary, people came here more intuitively than purposefully, went to the thermal water to cure many ailments.

Drinking treatment with local mineral waters is performed here regularly and in certain doses prescribed by a balneologist. The effectiveness of the effect of thermal waters on the body is due to the high content of minerals in them. The thermal water of Karlovy Vary has a whole range of useful properties:

improves intestinal microflora, accelerates metabolism; removes toxins from the body; improves digestion.

13. Mill Colonnade (Karlovy Vary)

Достопримечательности Чехии: Топ-35

The famous colonnade in Karlovy Vary

The spa town of Karlovy Vary is known all over the world as a mineral water resort and in fact represents the most important attraction of the Czech Republic. One of the main symbols of the architecture of this city was the Mill Colonnade, a large column structure built in the 19th century by the Czech architect Joseph Zitek. Initially, the colonnade was planned to be even more grandiose – three-storied, but due to lack of funds, the plan was not fully implemented: the one-story colonnade was 132 meters long and was built of 124 columns. Most of the local mineral springs are located in or near the Mill Colonnade:

The “mill” spring is made in the form of a vase, previously it was used only for bathing, later the water from the spring was considered useful for ingestion. The Rusalka spring was previously located separately, but later, due to the large flow of visitors, the source was expanded. As a result, it became part of the colonnade. “Prince Vratslav” was included in the Mill Colonnade not so long ago, before its own colonnade of vases towered over the spring. The “rocky” spring is located right in the rock, on the riverbank. Previously, horses were bathed in this spring, hence its second name – “Horse lazni”.

14. Kostnitsa in Kutna Hora (80 km from Prague)

Достопримечательности Чехии: Топ-35

The Gothic Church of Kostnitsa or the Church of All Saints in Kutna Hora cs:User:Zp

The town of Kutna Hora is located 80 kilometers from the Czech capital. Here is one of the most frightening and at the same time fascinating sights of the Czech Republic — the Church of All Saints, also known as the Kostnitsa. In the Middle Ages, the tradition of burying the dead in temples was widespread. This temple was no exception, but the bones of the deceased are not just stored here — all the interior decoration is made of them. Chandeliers, crosses, and coats of arms are decorated with bones — all this is impressive and even to some extent shocking to modern visitors.

The history of the Bonehouse began in the distant 13th century, when one of the monks scattered the holy land brought from Golgotha over the cemetery of the monastery. Later, the local land was considered holy, and it was considered a great honor to be buried in this cemetery. Over time, the cemetery began to grow rapidly in size due to endless wars, epidemics and floods. By the 16th century, so many bones had accumulated that it was at this time that their use began to decorate the temple decoration. By 1870, the interior was changed and the decoration of bones was created, which has been preserved in the temple to this day.

15. Mala Strana district (Prague)

Достопримечательности Чехии: Топ-35

The most beautiful Prague district is Small Country

In the Czech capital, between the Hradcany district and the Vltava River, lies the most beautiful area of Prague — the Small Country. Quiet narrow streets paved with stone, many cozy gardens and terraces, palace and park complexes with baroque facades — in short, the area is Small Country — that’s what you should see in the Czech Republic first of all if you find yourself in its capital.

On the Petrshin hill you can relax, enjoying the picturesque panorama of the city from the hill. St. Mikulas Cathedral, built in 1702 and which has become one of the most beautiful Baroque churches in Prague, is located on Malostranskaya Square. On the island of Kampa, you can arrange an educational walk and visit a lot of local attractions — for example, the John Lennon memorial wall, the bridge of lovers, a watermill, a marionette shop and a lot of other interesting places. Another memorable place in a Small Country is the Wall of Famine, or the Bread Wall, which at one time served as a powerful defensive structure. The wall was erected by order of Charles IV and was designed to deflect enemy attacks on the city during the constant wars.

16. Prague Chimes (Prague)

Достопримечательности Чехии: Топ-35

Medieval astronomical clock on the south wall of the tower of the Old Town Hall in Prague

Prague, the magical capital of Bohemia and one of the most beautiful European cities, opens the best sights of the Czech Republic. And one of the symbols of the city is the world-famous astronomical clock located on the Old Town Square, on the wall of the Old Town Hall. The mechanism and appearance of the watch were repeatedly destroyed, the most serious of which occurred during the Second World War, but it was subsequently restored by talented craftsmen. A ring with zodiac signs and symbols of the sun and moon moves around the circle of the astronomical dial. Special attention should be paid to such design elements as the figure of an angel at the top of the chimes, 12 figures of the apostles and a gilded rooster at the very top — all these sculptures serve as “defenders” from the influence of dark forces.

17. Ceske Budejovice Town Square (Ceske Budejovice)

Достопримечательности Чехии: Топ-35

A square town square with a Town Hall and a Baroque Samson Fountain in Ceske Budejovice

The main administrative, economic and cultural center of the South Bohemian region, as well as one of the “beer” cities of the Czech Republic, is located in the place where the Malshe and Vltava rivers merge together. Ceske Budejovice is one of the centers of Czech brewing, so there are two large breweries in the city, one of which produces the well-known Budweiser. And of course, the old town deserves attention with its buildings in the Renaissance, Baroque and Gothic styles. You should start exploring the city from the central square, which has a strict square shape. Along its perimeter, a number of historic houses are dotted with baroque facades. The central part of the square is crowned by the Samson Fountain of the 18th century. An important place is occupied by the City Hall building, a light blue structure with allegorical sculptures of Justice, Prudence, Wisdom and Courage.

18. Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul (Brno)

Достопримечательности Чехии: Топ-35

The Romanesque Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul towers over the city of Brno

The Cathedral of Peter and Paul, which once became the first church in the city of Brno, is of great importance for the entire Czech nation. At all times, starting from the 13th century, when the cathedral was founded, the Czech people found support and comfort in it, and for the enemies the cathedral was a symbol of fortitude, endurance and steadfastness of spirit. Two towers, soaring upwards and seemingly piercing the sky with their spires, have long become a recognizable symbol of the city. Today, the cathedral is one of the most sought-after attractions, and services are still held there. No less impressive is its rich interior decoration. And from the high observation tower of the cathedral, you can observe magnificent views of the urban surroundings from an 84-meter height.

Достопримечательности Чехии: Топ-35

View of the pilgrimage church of St. John of Nepomuk on the Green Mountain near the town of Zhdyar nad Sazavou

This church, whose architecture is particularly impressive when viewed from a height, is not just a temple or a place of mass pilgrimage. This is a story immortalized in stone about St. John of Nepomuk, the fruit of the inspiration of Abbot Vaclav Weimluva, a great admirer of this saint. The shape of the temple itself resembles a five—pointed star from above, and the surrounding buildings are rays radiating from the star. All these features are closely intertwined with the story of the holy martyr, who was executed by the king for not disclosing the secret of the royal consort’s confession. A bright star has risen over the body of the saint, who was drowned after his martyrdom in the waters of the Vltava River. Soon the body was pulled out of the water by the monks and buried. Later, in the process of reburial and exhumation, a whole intact tongue was found in the skull of the saint. After the manifestation of such miracles, temples consecrated in honor of St. John Nepomuk began to be built throughout the country.

This is the Cathedral of St. Barbara, dedicated to the patroness of all miners, miners and miners. The construction of the temple was directly related to the tragic story of three miners and a saint, to whom the miners turned with a request for salvation when there was no chance left. The saint heard their pleas, and the workers were able to get out of the rubble. One of the survivors became the founder of a beautiful temple, dedicating it to the savior. The interior of the cathedral surprises not only with its size, but also with some attributes that are not found in any other temple. These are frescoes dedicated to the work of miners and the life of the city, as well as a sculpture of a miner in white clothes.

By the way, the bullet fired at the Archduke is now presented as an exhibit in the museum of this castle. Franz Ferdinand, having bought the castle and the surrounding territories at the end of the 19th century, tried to return the structure to its original appearance. A park with greenhouses and a rose garden has appeared on the territory of the palace garden, decorated in Baroque style. The country’s first cultural heritage monument is located in the southeastern part of the Bohemia region. This is the world-famous Telch museum city, where organized tours from different cities of the country are made. The town is famous for its well-preserved Baroque architecture and other Renaissance styles, and its ancient center with unique buildings creates a stunning historical atmosphere. The approximate year of the city’s foundation is considered to be 1099, and it all began with the construction of the Romanesque church, which was laid by the royal governor Otto. Initially, all the city buildings were built of wood, but a fire in the 14th century destroyed almost all the buildings to the ground. That’s when new buildings were rebuilt, but already made of stone — they have been preserved to this day.

Sichrov Castle, surrounded by a magnificent park in the English style

In the north of the Czech Republic, a hundred kilometers from Prague, there is a piece of France — the Sichrov Castle, built by a French knight and belonging to a noble French family. Both the castle itself and the protected area in which it is located deserve attention – this is the territory of the Czech Paradise Natural Park. One of the notable features of the castle is the surrounding English-style park. The castle is often called the “carved wonder of the Czech Republic”, due to its carved wooden interiors, made by the famous carver Peter Busek. In the art gallery of the palace, you can see portraits of representatives of the noble family and other historical figures, as well as visit the ancient library.

Troski Fortress is a symbol of the Czech Paradise Reserve

If you choose what to see in the Czech Republic by car, you should choose wild and less crowded places, which are rarely visited by mass excursions. It is there that a unique historical spirit lurks, and pictures of the distant past come to mind. One of these monuments is the Troski Castle, which has become a symbol of the protected land of the Czech Paradise. Even from afar, two of its towers can be seen on a hill, darkened by time and overgrown with ivy. This fortress was built presumably in the 14th century. Over the centuries, the castle was repeatedly destroyed, was subjected to fires, and for several centuries it stood in desolation. And today, the uniqueness of this building is no longer given by historical details, but by its outlandish appearance.

Not far from the Skoda plant, 50 kilometers north of the capital, there is an unusual museum opened in honor of the centenary of the Czech automobile brand. The plant itself began its work back in 1895 and has more than a century of history. That is why Skoda is one of the most recognizable and worthy brands in the country today. Nowadays, the museum’s exhibition space occupies about 1800 meters, and each exhibit is dedicated to the history of the development of the automobile brand. Not only unique models of Czech cars have found their place here, but also individual spare parts and miniature copies of cars, as well as interesting photographs, drawings, documents, letters and awards. Some of the presented retro cars are still in good condition and even participate in runs.

Rural buildings of the XVIII—XIX centuries in the style of South Czech folk Baroque in the village of Golashovice

The Czech Republic keeps not only ancient palaces, ancient cathedrals and medieval squares on its land. Sights, nature and centuries-old Czech traditions are represented in a small village in the south of the country. The historical village of Golašovice clearly demonstrates how and how the Czech village lived in the past centuries. The layout of the buildings here has not changed over the centuries, so the colored houses that can be seen on the streets have been preserved mainly since the 18th and 19th centuries. In general, the history of this settlement has been mentioned in sources since the 13th century, and in the 16th century almost the entire population of the village died out due to the bubonic plague. This region went through many more trials, including the events of the Third Reich, and only in 1990 its restoration and settlement began. Today, the village has about one and a half hundred inhabitants.

The largest karst reserve in Europe is located 30 kilometers north of the Czech city of Brno. The mysterious underground world, which opens up to visitors of the reserve, allows you to escape from the mundane and immerse yourself in another, unknown dimension. After the familiar architecture of cities, this place beckons with the peculiar “architecture” of caves and rocks that nature itself has created for thousands of years. The area with caves stretches for 25 kilometers in length, and the total area is about 90 square kilometers. The entire area under the ground is occupied by cavities with underground rivers — there are more than a thousand caves in total. The main attraction of the caves is the Matsoha Chasm, the largest underground chasm in Europe, with a depth of 138 meters. Special bridges are equipped in the cave for its inspection.

35. Lake and ecological trail of Lipno (southern Bohemia)

Amazing panorama of the lake and the Lipno ecological trail in Southern Bohemia

If the Central Czech Republic is a land of castles, fortresses, museums and other cultural and historical values, then the sights of the western Czech Republic are the natural treasures of the country: nature reserves, living springs, thermal resorts. Some natural objects can also be found to the southwest – one of them is Lake Lipno and the surrounding area. This area has been closed to tourists for 40 years and was opened not so long ago, so today the places in the vicinity of the lake are the purest corner of pristine nature. An unusual ecotrope “along the treetops” is laid in the forest growing here — a wooden platform with a length of 372 meters and a constant smooth rise to a height of 24 meters above the ground, where it ends with a 40-meter observation tower.
