Amsterdam authorities have imposed restrictions on the construction of new hotel complexes. The purpose of this solution is to combat the problem of excessive tourism and preserve the unique appearance of the capital of the Netherlands, — informs Pravda.Ru .
Now, a permit for the construction of hotels will be issued only if certain criteria are met: the closure of existing facilities of a rival type, mandatory compliance with the total number of beds and improvement of the environmental parameters of the new building.
It is noted that the restrictions do not affect already approved projects. In addition, the city is taking active measures to reduce the mass flow of tourists.
In 2023, the municipality banned the arrival of cruise ships and closed the cruise terminal. A ban on the use of cannabis on the streets of the Red Quarter was also introduced and excursions passing through this territory were stopped. These actions are carried out within the framework of the Amsterdam Tourism in Balance program, which was launched by the city Council in 2021 and involves the intervention of the authorities when reaching the mark of 18 million tourists.
