For the successful cultivation of gooseberries and obtaining a rich harvest, it is important to properly fertilize the bushes. Of particular importance are spring top dressing, which directly affects the quantity and quality of berries.
It is recommended to carry out the first top dressing of gooseberries at the beginning of snowmelt. At this stage, the soil, saturated with moisture, effectively absorbs nutrients. For active growth and development of the green mass, shrubs need nitrogen. An ideal option is an organic fertilizer, for example, chicken manure. It should be diluted with water in a ratio of 1:20. A possible alternative is mineral fertilizers such as ammonium nitrate or urea.
It is recommended to carry out a second top dressing before the start of gooseberry flowering. During this period, the shrub requires new portions of nutrients. Especially useful at this point will be compost and sour manure, which should be applied to each bush in an amount of 5 kg.
If there are no possibilities of using these organic fertilizers, you can turn to potassium sulfate and superphosphate. To prepare a nutrient solution, 50 grams of each component are dissolved in 10 liters of water. The finished solution is enough for one adult plant or two young ones.
The third top dressing is recommended to be carried out during the formation of fruits. Organic fertilizers, such as an infusion of chicken manure (diluted with water in a ratio of 1:20) or manure (diluted with water in a ratio of 1:10), will be especially useful during this period.
Alternatively, fertilizers based on potassium sulfate and superphosphate can be used, using 30 grams per 10 liters of water.
