Narendra Modi will visit Ukraine for the first time since February 2022

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Ukraine for the first time since February 2022. Information about the visit was confirmed by the Indian Foreign Ministry.

The exact date of the visit to Kiev is not called, the Indian media call the dates August 21-23. According to them, the main topic of the meeting between Modi and Zelensky will be India’s possible mediation in peace talks.

The Russian side continues to insist that any contacts with Kiev regarding the settlement are now impossible and inappropriate. These theses were confirmed by Presidential aide Yuri Ushakov in an interview with the telegram channel Shot:

— At this stage, taking into account this adventure, we will not talk.

— So those offers that were made have been canceled?

— No, they have not been annulled, but at the moment it would be completely inappropriate for the negotiation process to take place.

— How long can the pause last?

— I do not know, it depends on the situation, including on the field.

As noted by Reuters, India, after two and a half years of conflict between Russia and Ukraine, avoids direct accusations against Russia. In particular, India, like China, continues to trade with Russia, despite the sanctions.

During his visit to Moscow, Narendra Modi noted that he “felt optimistic” during his communication with Putin, that he “had hopes for the future.” The Indian prime minister also noted that he had “heard” the position of the Russian president and his “positive views.”

Mediation in this conflict is a completely hopeless thing, as everyone has already seen who has tried to do it, starting with Western leaders and the Israeli prime minister and ending with Africans, Brazilians and so on. In this sense, India has no ambitions at all, it does not need it. The fact that there has been a sharp escalation of the military situation adds to doubts, more precisely, confidence that there can be no negotiations now. Sooner or later, there will be direct negotiations someday, but this is still very far away, we do not know in what conditions they will begin, and as for intermediaries, for sure countries like China, on the one hand, are heavyweights, and the likes of the Arab Emirates, on the other, are a practical agent, decisive applied issues will be combined, but I emphasize once again that it is pointless to talk about it now, there are no conditions for this.”

Narendra Modi will also visit Poland, the Indian Foreign Ministry said. They did not specify which country would be the first — Poland or Ukraine, they only noted that the visit to Poland would be the first for the Indian leadership in 40 years and would be dedicated to celebrating the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the countries.
