In Greece, owners were required to register real estate by the end of November 2024, otherwise it will pass to the state. Such an amendment was adopted in 2023.
The number of vacant and undeclared plots without buildings in the country is 3.3 million, 22% of the total number. Of these, 10.14% are located in areas where the registry has already been closed.
There are about 147 thousand apartments in residential complexes, of which slightly more than 90 thousand (61.3%) are also located in areas with a closed registry.
According to the law, the objects become the property of the state after eight years after the closure of the registry. It is expected that 14 thousand undeclared housing units will be brought to the market soon.
Konstantinos Kiranakis, Deputy Head of the Ministry of Digital Policy, states: “We are negotiating with the Ministry of Finance to understand what we will do with these facilities next. We will transfer some of the vacant plots located close to villages and towns to municipalities, which will turn them into public spaces. Apartments can become social housing, in particular, for young couples.”
