Borrowers under the age of 25 indicate that they know about government programs more often than the average population in the country
83% of Russians under the age of 25 know about the existence of preferential mortgage programs, a joint study by Domclick and Sbermarketing showed. This figure is higher than the average for all age groups (60%), analysts specify.
As for awareness of the specific parameters of preferential mortgage programs, the highest rate among young people is for “Family Mortgage” — 66% of respondents under the age of 25 know about it. This is followed by the “State Support” program, which ended on July 1, 2024 — every second respondent (51%) has heard about it. 33% know about IT mortgages, and 28% of respondents know about “Rural mortgages”. 22% of the study participants indicated that they know about the “Far Eastern and Arctic mortgage”.
Domclick notes that borrowers under the age of 25 accounted for about 9% of all Sberbank mortgage transactions in 2024. “The share of mortgage transactions among young people has been stable in recent years, despite large-scale changes in lending conditions. The study showed that young people show great interest in the topic of loans and borrowings,” Evgeny Batyashin, Director of Research and Development at Sbermarketing, commented on the survey results. The expert added that about one in two respondents indicated that they were well versed in banking services, and 94% noted that they were interested in financial literacy training.
The study also showed that among young people, women are more aware of preferential programs. Thus, 73% of women under the age of 25 know about the “Family mortgage”, while 59% of men in the same age group know about it.
The level of knowledge about preferential mortgage programs is higher among young Russians who have received higher education, it is 91%. The rate among young people with secondary specialized education is 82%, with secondary education — 75%. “The statistics of Sber transactions indirectly confirm the link between the level of education and interest in purchasing real estate with a mortgage. The median age of the borrower (in the segment of youth under 25 years old) It is 23 years old — this is the age of obtaining higher education at the specialist or master’s level,” the study explains. Among the regions, the maximum level of youth awareness of preferential programs was noted in Moscow — 90%.
Domclick also compiled a portrait of a young borrower based on an analysis of Sberbank’s mortgage transactions in the first half of 2024. Statistics have shown that 59% of borrowers under the age of 25 are not married. The median income of the borrower of the youngest age group is 108 thousand rubles, this indicator has increased 2.1 times over the year, analysts specify.
