Bali Island is one of the most popular resorts in Indonesia. More than 6.5 million tourists arrive to relax on the beaches of Bali every year.
In the 1960s, Bali was considered a hippie hangout, but later infrastructure improvements were carried out: a modern airport was opened, budget hotels and luxury hotels were built, roads and a water pipeline were laid.
Bali is now a world center for surfing, diving and beach tourism.
The best beaches in Bali
Bali is part of the Malay Archipelago system: the island is washed by the Indian Ocean on the south side, and the Pacific Ocean on the north. The Lombok and Bali Straits are separated from Lombok and Java Islands from the east and west.
The size of Bali is small, the island occupies 5.4 thousand km2. Bali stretches for 80 km in the meridional direction, the distance from the west coast to the east coast is 145 km. There are 2 active volcanoes on the island.
When choosing a vacation time in Bali, seasonal manifestations should be taken into account. Although the climate on the island is equatorial, there are only 2 seasons. The wet season begins in November, and until March there are often short-term thunderstorms at night, cloudy weather during the day.
The air is humid and warmed up to +30 °C. During the rainy season, the ocean, especially on the west coast, is polluted by river outflows.
From June to October, the dry period lasts, which is characterized by a decrease in air temperature to +26-28 ° C. The water off the coast of the island remains warm to +26-30 ° C.
Bali’s beaches are located on the entire coast of the island, but beautiful and comfortable, suitable for family holidays, are located on the Bukit Peninsula, which protrudes in the southern part of Bali. Also, well-maintained beach areas stretch along the east coast.
Balinese beaches are different in appearance: they are covered with black or white sand, large or small pebbles. There are often strong waves on many beaches. If the beach area is protected from wind and currents by a coral reef, then it is necessary to go quite far to the depth through rocky shallow water.
Nusa Dua
In the east of the Bukit Peninsula is the most famous holiday destination in Bali – Nusa Dua. The gently sloping coast is over 3 km long and 50-80 m wide and is covered with yellowish soft sand. The descent from the shore into the water is smooth.
The shallow waters cover a vast area up to the coral reef, which blocks access to the shore to the waves. Strong high waves are rare here, but strong tides occur in the afternoon.
Bali Beaches: Nusa Dua
Conventionally, the beach strip is divided into 3 sections: in the center of the village there is a city beach, where vacationers are mainly local residents. Luxury hotels have been built in the northern and southern parts. Access to the sea is free in all areas, but sun beds and umbrellas on the beaches near the hotels are provided only to those who rest in the hotel complex.
Nusa Dua has showers, toilets, changing rooms. Passage to the sea is carried out through inspection points or hotels, street vendors are not allowed to enter, therefore, the territory near the sea is usually calm and quiet. Those who wish can book water activities (diving, surfing, boating).
There are cafes and restaurants on the beach. One of the most interesting food establishments is The Pirates Bay cafe, decorated in the style of a pirate ship.
Not far from the beach there is the Nusa Dua Theater, where bright shows with a national flavor are shown 4 times a week.
Next to the theater are:
- Bali Collection shopping complex with restaurants, shops, craft workshops, spa;
- The Pasifika Bali Museum, where works of art from 200 countries are presented in 11 halls;
- Water Blow Beach observation deck, built on a rocky cliff – waves hit the rock and form a natural fountain;
- Surf & Turf Aquatic Complex with lots of attractions and pools.
A variety of accommodation options are available near Nusa Dua Beach. Modern 5* hotel complexes with swimming pools and spa complexes are concentrated here, there are small villas and apartments.
Heger
The beaches of Bali often stretch in a continuous strip, it is in the southern part that the territory of Nusa Dua turns into a recreation area called Geger. The beach is a 2-kilometer sandy strip up to 70 m wide. The coast goes smoothly into the water, the shallow water is very long, and continues to the coral reef. The ebb tide on Geger is almost not felt.
The beach is equipped with sun beds, umbrellas, cafes and shops with beach goods, massage rooms. Although street vendors are present, the beach is considered a peaceful place to relax. Near Geger there are villas, guesthouses, apartments, there are hotels — Mulia Resort 5*, Revivo Wellness Resort 4*, Rantuns Place 3*.
Kuta
The Kuta area, located on the coast of the Indian Ocean at the southwestern tip of the island, is a surfing center and a large resort cluster. The beaches, covered with snow-white sand, stretch for 8 km. Conventionally, the coastal strip is divided into independent beach areas of Germanus, Pantai, Tuban, Seminyak, Legian, but all this is Kuta beach.
Wide, up to 80 m, beach areas are surrounded by palm groves, comfortable recreation conditions are created on the shore: there are changing rooms, toilets, showers, you can rent a chaise longue and an umbrella. Drinks are sold on the beach, souvenir shops and cafes, clubs and bars are open. The area is considered a hangout, so it is always crowded and noisy here.
Kuta beach is known for strong steady waves, for which surfers come from all over the world, and in the northern part the ocean rolls in the strongest, forming high powerful waves. There are schools on the coast where they teach surfing, equipment rental costs 50 thousand rupees per hour.
The only disadvantage of this Balinese beach is that with rains, the coastal part of the ocean is heavily polluted by the runoff of numerous rivers flowing into the ocean.
Accommodation in Kuta is represented by a variety of options: there are cheap guesthouses and expensive 5* hotels with swimming pools and spa complexes.
Jimbaran
Near Denpasar Airport, in the north-west of the Bukit Peninsula, there is the Jimbaran district – a former fishing village, and now a popular resort area and fishing center. The beach is characterized by a smooth descent to the water, long shallow water, besides a strong low tide after lunch allows you to walk along the seabed.
The beach strip occupies 4 km of the coastline of Jimbaran Bay and is conditionally divided into 3 sectors. In the northern part, Pantai Kelan beach begins near the airport and is rocky, so fishermen mainly spend their time here. In the central section of Kedonganan, the beach is covered with pure white sand.
The most developed resort infrastructure is presented here: there are many sports equipment rental points, bars and restaurants. To the south is the resort area of Pantai Muaya, where 4-5* hotels are open, with their own well-groomed beach areas.
There are many hotels in the Jimbaran resort area, many have their own swimming pools. Entertainment complexes and shops are open here. Umbrellas and sun loungers are offered on all beach areas, and surfboards, diving and snorkeling equipment are available at rental points. The proximity of the fish market affects the variety of fish menus in restaurants.
Tourists call the opportunity to admire beautiful sunsets another advantage of Jimbaran beaches. However, during the wet period, a lot of garbage is carried out on the coast, and the water becomes cloudy.
Sanur
The beaches of Bali on the east coast are calm, there are much fewer vacationers on them. The most popular place is Sanur beach, which is considered the most suitable for a vacation with kids.
A walking path has been laid along the 5-kilometer coastal strip covered with soft yellow sand, cafes and restaurants with outdoor terraces have been built, and spas are open.
The shallow waters in this area of Bali are long, and there are almost no strong waves and currents. On the beach, which smoothly goes into the water, children’s rest is safe. In any season, the water remains clean and transparent. Access to the beach area is free, sun loungers are offered for convenience, but you can sit near the water and on your towel.
Not far from Sanur there are hotels of categories 4-5*. There are many villas, apartments and guest house rooms for rent in this area.
Lovina
In the north of the island, the coastal 8-kilometer strip between Bubunan and Singaraja is occupied by Lovina Beach. Here, the sand of volcanic origin has a black color, but looks gray-brown. The water is almost always clean, only in February-March there may be garbage due to rains.
The northern coast of Bali is separated from the Balinese Sea by a coral reef, so the waves on Lovina are small and not suitable for surfing. But in clear water it is interesting to swim with a mask or dive into the depths.
Diving with an instructor will cost 1.5 million rupees. In the morning, tourists are offered access to the sea on fishing boats – at this time dolphins swim near the coast.
Lovina is divided into beach areas, named after nearby villages:
- Binaria;
- Happy;
- Penimbangan;
- Banyalite;
- Temukus;
- Kubu Gembong;
- Rukad Kebol.
There are hotels and cafes in every village, but most of the hotels, shops and restaurants are open in the village of Kalibukbuk.
Changu
The beaches of Bali on the southwestern coast form a long chain, collectively called Changu, which includes beach areas:
- Nelayan;
- Berava;
- Bolong;
- The echo.
The coastline in this part of Bali is covered with volcanic sand of rich black color, which attracts those who want to take beautiful photos, especially expressive pictures are taken at sunset.
Due to the powerful waves, Changu is unsuitable for swimming or diving. Strong winds prevent the installation of small umbrellas, so vacationers are located under large stationary canopies of beach clubs and restaurants.
People come to Changa to surf, and experienced athletes especially appreciate this place. There are many surf schools on the beaches, and equipment is offered for rent.
The choice of accommodation is diverse, private apartments, bungalows and hotels are available for rent. There is a camping site near the beach.
Virgin Beach
On the east coast of Bali, you can find sparsely populated beaches such as Virgin Beach, located near the villages of Perasi and Bugbug. A narrow dirt path leads from the parking lot to the beach.
The beach occupies 700 m in a small bay surrounded by hills overgrown with tropical vegetation. Opposite the shore there is a small uninhabited island, to which fishermen ferry tourists. The coast is covered with light fine sand. The sea is usually calm, and the waves appear with the tide.
On the left side of the beach area there are several cafes where you can use toilets and showers, take a sun lounger. The gentle entry into the water is not complicated by stones.
There is a coral reef on the west side of Virgin Beach, 10 m from the shore, so it is interesting to swim with a mask or scuba gear here. Many small stones make it difficult to enter the water.
Other beaches
Almost the entire coast of Bali consists of beaches of varying degrees of comfort for tourists, information about the less popular ones is presented in the table:
Title | Location | Characteristic |
Balangan | Bukit Peninsula, west coast, near Balangan village | The 65 m wide and 600 m long beach is optimal for surfing. |
Lembeng | East coast of the island, Biayung village | The beach is unsuitable for swimming, there are high waves and dangerous currents. Surfers are attracted by a special type of wave moving along the shore. Gazebos for picnics have been made on the shore, and a walking path has been laid. |
Uluwatu | Bukit Peninsula, West Coast | A long staircase descends to the shore. The 100-meter beach is partially located under a limestone cliff. At high tide, the area of the coast is reduced. The developed infrastructure includes restaurants, bars, surf schools and spas. |
Amed | The east coast of the island, the village of Amed | The 14 km long beach area is divided by small coves into convenient private areas. The shore is covered with volcanic sand. The place is suitable for recreation, diving and surfing. |
The most beautiful
The beaches in Bali are distinguished by their picturesque beauty, which is appreciated by vacationers. Many people come to the Indonesian island for interesting shots and unusual photo shoots.
Padang-Padang
Padang Padang Beach, located on the western side of the Bukit Peninsula, is considered the most famous. To get to the shore, you need to go through a narrow cave washed by the ocean in limestone rocks. There is a passage in the cave. There is also a steep staircase of 50 steps leading from the shore to the sea. Access to the beach is paid, admission costs 15,000 rupees.
The attractiveness of the shore is provided by snow-white sand of a large fraction and clear transparent water of a rich turquoise hue. Large stones covered with dark green vegetation located in shallow water add color to the landscape.
At sunrise and sunset, many people come to Padang Padang to arrange a photo shoot. However, with rains, algae and debris are carried to the coastal strip, which makes the location unattractive.
There is a shower, toilet, umbrella rental and a cafe-bar on the beach. There are souvenir shops on the way to the holiday destination.
Padang is also in demand among surfers. The water, passing through the rocks located far from the shore, forms special waves. On a high cylindrical wave, you can slide along the outer surface or roll inside. The trick belongs to the difficult category, but everyone can surf – there is equipment rental and a school of instructors on the beach.
Dreamland
For the sake of the postcard landscape, tourists go to the beach, called Dreamland. The beach is located on the western side of the Bukit Peninsula near the village of Pekatu.
The beach is small, only 0.5 km long, but people come here for photo shoots, including weddings: here black rocks covered with mosses surround the shore covered with snow-white sand, on which emerald waves roll. However, the beach is suitable for swimming only in the morning, in the afternoon there are high strong waves, interesting for surfers.
The infrastructure is represented by traditional changing rooms, showers, toilets, rental of sunbeds and surfboards. Near the place of rest, you can find both budget accommodation and 3-4* hotels, villas.
Bingin
Beautiful photos are taken on the beach, which is located on the western side of the Bukit Peninsula near the village of Pekatu. Multi-tiered wooden houses overhang the beach, built into a sheer cliff. The low buildings are surrounded by tropical vegetation.
The beach strip up to 15 m wide is covered with light sand, which is interspersed with small black stones and large fragments of rocks. The beach is unsuitable for swimming because of the high waves, but it attracts surfers. There are several hotels, restaurants, and equipment rentals near the shore.
Green Bowl
The southern part of the Bukit Peninsula is rich in beach areas, including those characterized by the special beauty of tropical nature. Snow–white sand, blue water, black rocks – the classic view of the ocean island attracts those who want to take beautiful photos to the Green Bowl.
A stone staircase of 300 steps leads to the coastal strip, when the tide is out, it overlooks a coral reef overgrown with green mosses.
The coastline is 50 m long and has no infrastructure, because with the tide the beach is completely covered with water. Tourists use small caves in the surrounding rocks to hide things and wait out the tide. Some caves have shrines — stone statues.
You can swim at the Green Bowl only in the morning at low tide, surfers are interested in the beach at high tide. However, there is a current here, which is dangerous for novice athletes.
There are many beaches in Bali, they differ significantly in terms of infrastructure and recreation opportunities. It is more convenient to engage in all types of surfing on the south coast, and during the rainy season the southeastern beaches are more interesting, and in the dry season the western ones.
Diving-friendly beach areas are located in the northern and eastern parts of the island. The most suitable resorts for swimming, especially with children, are Lovina, Sanur and Nusa Dua.
