An unexpected cause of diabetes has been named: and it’s not just sugar at all

Названа неожиданная причина возникновения диабета: и это вовсе не только сахар

Swedish scientists from Uppsala University have found that a serious lack of sleep for adults increases the likelihood of type 2 diabetes. They came to the conclusion that this effect cannot be fully compensated only by a healthy diet without sugar. The details of the study were published in the scientific journal JAMA Network Open.

Previous studies have already identified a link between chronic sleep deprivation and an increased risk of type 2 diabetes. However, healthy dietary habits, such as regular consumption of fruits and vegetables, can reduce this danger. In this regard, scientists decided to find out whether a good diet can reduce the likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes with a lack of sleep. The co-author of the work, somnologist Diana Noga, stressed that it is necessary to find out whether it is possible to reduce the chances of this disease only through proper nutrition.

In the course of the study, scientists analyzed data from the British biobank, where about half a million records on the genetic condition of residents of the United Kingdom were collected. A study of these records and the results of health and lifestyle surveys showed that the duration of sleep from three to five hours a day significantly increases the risk of type 2 diabetes.

Although proper nutrition can slightly reduce the threat of developing this disease, it does not completely eliminate it. To minimize the chances of type 2 diabetes, experts emphasize that it is necessary not only to adhere to a healthy diet, but also to sleep at least six to seven hours a day.
