The Turkish national carrier received an “anti—recommendation”: a major tour operator recommended that Russian tourists not fly Turkish Airlines flights in case of transfers to flights to South America, in this case to Mexico. According to ATOR, the reason was another incident at Istanbul airport, when three Space Travel tourists were not allowed on a flight to Cancun. At the same time, all warnings from the air carrier were followed — and the Russian tourists were not given any explanations, except for the “strange and frankly boorish” message.
The tourists were supposed to fly to Cancun on April 8 on Turkish Airlines with a connection in Istanbul, representatives of the tour operator said. Due to the delay of the Moscow flight, the initial connection was disrupted, but they were given new boarding passes without delay. And provided a hotel. But at the time of check-in for a new flight, boarding was refused. “No official documents about denied boarding were issued to passengers, the airline representative did not come to them,” representatives of the tour operator said. Instead, the tourists received a “strange and frankly boorish message” that since the tourists had not previously visited “such powerful countries as America, Canada or England,” as well as Mexico, they would not be able to fly “in accordance with the rules of the Mexican government.”
Earlier, the Turkish national carrier clarified these rules, assuring that tourists flying without luggage, hotel reservations or return tickets will have problems (read here). However, this time, tourists flying business class as part of a tour package were deceived – that is, they paid for tickets in both directions and have confirmed hotel reservations in their hands. “Personally, I do not understand why the airline lacks the competence to identify such risks in advance, even before the first segment of the flight, and not before the gate in Istanbul, when it becomes more difficult to solve the problem a priori,” said Artur Muradian, CEO of Space Travel.
He also noted that the travelers paid 45 thousand dollars for the trip. The tour operator had to compensate them. He stressed that such excesses not only entail financial losses, but also, in general, have the most adverse effect on both tourists themselves and tour operators. Also, Space Travel intends to “go all the way” in establishing the truth about the incident. In the meantime, they recommend categorically refraining from flying to Mexico on Turkish airlines, noting that none of their competitors in the Middle East allows themselves anything like this with regard to Russians.
