Sochi Mayor’s Office: the number of tourists with intestinal infection is growing at the resort

Мэрия Сочи: на курорте растет число туристов с кишечной инфекцией

In Sochi resorts in July and August, there is an increase in the number of visits to doctors complaining of intestinal infection. Tourists make up the lion’s share of all cases – 65%. At the same time, almost 90% of them are children, the city administration said.

According to Vladimir Orobey, the chief sanitary officer for Sochi, such dynamics are controlled, and local authorities are taking all necessary measures to prevent infectious diseases. In particular, Rospotrebnadzor checks seawater off the coast and at depth on a weekly basis. The results are consistent with the norms.

As for requests for medical care, in most cases, vacationers themselves are to blame for poisoning: they do not follow the rules of personal hygiene, eat in questionable establishments, swim in inappropriate places. Nevertheless, due to the heat, some rivers have partially become shallow, and the water stagnates in certain areas. Nevertheless, changes in microbiological indicators are recorded in these areas, so the use of water here is limited by the decision of the city sanitary and antiepidemiological commission.

In turn, the deputy head of the city, Elena Kanyuk, noted that the resort has been informing tourists about the necessary measures to protect their health all season. “There is an audio message on the beaches, memos on the rules of personal hygiene on vacation are posted on the stands. Sanitary cleaning of public areas, treatment and disinfection of public areas have been strengthened. Since the beginning of summer, the frequency of garbage collection has been increased. Additionally, clean–up days are held in the districts,” added Kanyuk.

Earlier, not only vacationers complained about the polluted areas of Sochi, but also local residents, including hoteliers: “There has never been such a stench – it stings the eyes.” The main complaint of Sochi residents is overflowing drains and illegal discharge of sewage into the sea. As a result, a characteristic smell is established on the beaches, and guests suffer from rotavirus infection.
