The authorities of the Italian region of Tuscany have launched the “Residence in the Mountains” program, which is aimed at stimulating relocation to small towns in the region experiencing depopulation.
The program covers 76 towns and began its activities in June. The goal of the initiative is to stabilize the population. A fund of 2,800,000 euros has been created, from which funds will be paid to those who decide to settle in the Tuscan countryside.
Important details of the new “Residency in the Mountains 2024” program
The Foundation provides grants from 10,000 to 30,000 euros for moving to Tuscany and repairing rural houses. Such an approach should contribute to the re-settlement and economic revival of mountainous areas. The purpose of the program is to counteract the marginalization of these areas.
The grant covers 50% of the cost of repairing a house in one of the 76 towns in Tuscany with a population of less than 5,000 inhabitants. Among these towns are the famous San Casciano dei Bagni with thermal pools, Michelangelo’s Caprese, the birthplace of Michelangelo, and the island of Capraia Isola.
The program is available to Italians, EU citizens and third-country nationals with a long-term residence permit in the EU for at least 10 years. Candidates must commit to making Tuscan real estate their primary home. Applications are accepted until July 27.

Italy’s previous experience in implementing similar schemes
Italy has been experimenting with various schemes for some time, trying to rejuvenate the population of its rural towns. In 2022, the Sardinian government offered people 15,000 euros each to move to the Mediterranean island, allocating 45 million euros to subsidize 3,000 grants. The main condition was relocation to a Sardinian town with a population of less than 3,000 people.
In Calabria, new residents were promised $33,000 each, and in the village of Santo Stefano di Sessanio they offered up to $52,022 in grants for relocation and work. According to Gianluca Gallo, a member of the regional council, the purpose of these initiatives is to stimulate the local economy and breathe new life into small communities.
