According to the newspaper Argumenty I Fakty, the bodies of five people were found on May 26 on a boat off the island of Tonky on Lake Baikal.

The Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation reports that all five people (the skipper and four tourists) died due to carbon monoxide poisoning.

“According to preliminary data, on May 26, 2024, the bodies of 5 people who showed no signs of life were found on a boat on Lake Baikal near the island of Thin. The death of the skipper and passengers of the vessel occurred due to carbon monoxide poisoning,” the message says.

According to the investigation, four vacationers rented a ship and hired a captain, safely reached the island, and already died near its shore after inhaling carbon monoxide. According to one version, the tourists left the engine running to keep warm on a cold night, according to the second — the equipment was faulty.

A criminal case was initiated under Part 3 of Article 238 of the Criminal Code — provision of services that do not meet safety requirements.
