Genting Highlands in Malaysia: cable car, amusement park, casino, outlets and temple

Genting Highlands in Malaysia is a large entertainment complex at an altitude of 2000 meters near Kuala Lumpur. In my opinion, Genting Highlands is a great place to travel for 1 day from Kuala Lumpur. In this review, I will tell you why Genting Highlands is included in the list of must see places in KL, what interesting things you can see there and how to get there from the capital of Malaysia.

Why you should go to Genting Highlands: 5 reasons

Here are five reasons why it’s worth going to the Genting Highlands complex:

1. Awana Skyway cable car is the only one near Kuala Lumpur. Below in the report there will be photos and a life hack with tickets.
2. The Chinese temple Chin Swee Cave Temple is the main attraction.
3. The only casino in Malaysia. Poker tournaments are held here.
4. Two theme parks: SkyTropolis (indoor theme park) and Genting SkyWorlds (open-air park).

I have been to Genting Highlands twice, and the second time I returned because of the Chinese temple Chin Swee Cave Temple. What for? I’ll tell you below.

I will immediately answer the question: how much time should I plan to visit Genting? It took me two hours to get to the Chinese temple alone. If you want to visit both outlets and theme parks, then plan the whole day.

? Tip: when is the best time to go to Genting Highlands? The best time to visit is on a weekday. There are a lot of people here on weekends and holidays. Malaysians love this place and come here with whole families. By time: come in the morning. You will see how low the clouds go over the hills.

How to get to Genting Highlands

It’s easy enough to get to Genting Highlands:

1. By bus — buses depart from the central bus station and arrive at the lower station of the cable car.
2. Guided Tours — there are many daily mini bus tours. There are full-day excursions only to Genting (here is the link to the tour), and there is a visit to the Batu caves, another attraction of Kuala Lumpur (here is the link to the tour).
3. By yourself in a car — the first time I came to Genting Highlands was in a rented car. There are several places nearby that are also interesting to visit. For example, waterfalls. How I rented a car in Malaysia, I told you in this article.
4. By car with a driver — on my last trip to Kuala Lumpur, I ordered a car with a personal driver for 8 hours. It was just enough to go to Genting Highlands and stop at Colmar Tropicale. I ordered a car at Kluck three days before the trip. Here is a link to the company I went with.

The journey to Genting Highlands by bus or by car takes about 1 hour. At the end, the serpentine begins and the climb begins.

Awana Skyway Cable Car

The Awana Skyway cable car starts at the foot of Genting Mountain. You can also drive to the very top of the mountain, where there are casinos, outlets and attractions, but the cable car is more interesting. The cable car has three stations: the lower one, the Chinese temple Chin Swee Station and the upper one. I will tell you about the Chinese temple and why it is worth seeing below.

There are two types of cabins on the Awana Skyway cable car: conventional and glass-floored. The price difference is small, but everyone buys regular tickets and rides for 6 people in a booth.

Here is my life hack: take tickets to a booth with a glass floor and you will ride as a VIP without outsiders. The price difference between a regular booth and a booth with a glass floor is only $ 2.

I bought tickets in advance on the Kluk website, here is a link to the ticket page. There is a Combo deals tab where you can buy round-trip tickets right away. It turns out to be more profitable than buying separately. This applies to both conventional booths and glass-floored booths.

Chinese Temple Chin Swee Cave Temple

The Chinese Temple Chin Swee Cave Temple is a separate attraction in Genting Highlands. I spent two hours there and would have stayed longer if not for further plans.

The temple complex consists of cave tunnels, a huge pagoda, a Buddha statue and scenes about Chinese purgatory for sinners. The views from the temple terrace are breathtaking.

I advise you not to go down to the pagoda immediately, but to walk along a narrow path along the cliff. There will be very colorful scenes of punishments of sinners, the Chinese goddess of mercy and free foot massage. The latter is a unique thing that you can try here in this temple.

Then the same path opens onto the same terrace. Only along the way there will be two beautiful viewing rooms. One for the Buddha, one for the pagoda.

SkyTropolis and Genting SkyWorlds Theme Parks

Genting SkyWorlds — this is the newest amusement park in Southeast Asia. This is a huge open-air theme park. There are 9 unique themed worlds (zones) and 26 attractions, including roller coasters, and various entertainment and children’s shows. Suitable for all ages. Tickets to the park must be purchased separately. You can do it on the spot at the checkout, or you can do it on the Kluk website. They often come there at a discount. SkyTropolis Funland Indoor Theme Park is an indoor theme park. It offers 20 attractions. Suitable for all ages and for families. Tickets can also be purchased on the Kluk website at a discount, here is a link to the ticket page.
