An emergency evacuation of the population is being carried out by Thai authorities near the resort city of Pattaya, where an ammonia leak occurred at an ice factory. Many tourists fear that the poisonous cloud may reach hotels located on the coast.
The situation is quite serious. As reported by bangkokpost.com , all people within a radius of 3 km from the place of emergency are urgently evacuated. More than 100 people have already sought medical help, some of whom have been hospitalized. All the victims have similar symptoms characteristic of ammonia vapor poisoning: burning in the eyes and nose, as well as a feeling of tightness in the chest and difficulty breathing. Several people lost consciousness.
Eyewitnesses told Thai media that they heard a loud explosion that occurred on the territory of the plant, after which clouds of smoke rose and a pungent odor characteristic of this gaseous substance spread.
Local authorities are spraying water in the surrounding area to neutralize the dangerous effects of ammonia. Residents and tourists are advised not to leave the premises and not to open windows. It is also worth giving up the use of food and especially water, which are located in the evacuation zone. The authorities promise that all the consequences associated with the release of dangerous gas will be eliminated within 2 days.
Bang Lamung district, where the incident occurred, is located about 15 km from the center of Pattaya resort and a few kilometers from the popular Elephant Village. Subscribers of the telegram channel “Roof of the Tourist House” report that the enterprise itself is located between the northern bus terminal and the aquarium.
It should be borne in mind that ammonia gas is a very toxic compound, which, at a high concentration of vapors, causes not only coughing and burning in the nasopharynx, but also excitement and delirium, and deaths are not uncommon.
