It is reported that a 30-year-old tourist died after being hit on the head by a ringing church bell in the Spanish city of Tarragona.
A man, believed to be Spanish, was injured while visiting a church tower in the El Pinel de Bray region on Saturday morning. He was instantly killed by a large bell when it was rung as part of the church’s post-Easter celebrations, Spanish media reported.
Spanish churches maintain the tradition of attracting visitors to the Santa Magdalena Romeria festival, which is held two weeks after Easter.
According to media reports, the man was part of a group that traveled from Terra Alta in Catalonia, and he climbed a church tower when he received a blow to the head.
Laura Vallespie, mayor of the Pinel de Bray region, which covers Terra Alta, declared three days of mourning and suspended Santa Magdalena celebrations.
She said: “There has always been a tradition to ring the bell in honor of St. Magdalena. Unfortunately, it ended badly today.”
Although bell ringing is a tradition, the mayor did not rule out that in the future it will be observed in a different way.
Ms Vallespie added: “Of course, it needs to be done differently. We will skip today because we are in a state of shock, and then we will discuss this with the city council, the Santa Magdalena Association and the church.”
