77.3% of foreign tourists in Thailand prefer street food to restaurants. Such data is provided by the Bangkok Post with reference to the deputy head of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) for digital research and development Tirasil Tapen. The survey conducted by this organization involved 30,054 respondents from among those vacationing in the kingdom in 2023.
The only type of stationary catering, the interest in which foreign guests increased from 11.9% in 2019 to 33.2% last year, is coffee shops. These are the most democratic establishments, which also confirms the desire of tourists to save money. In 2023, vacationers spent an average of 4,094 Thai baht (about 10.7 thousand rubles at the current exchange rate) on food during the trip – 43% less than in 2019. Street food – street cafes, as well as “makashnits” (food carts) are very developed in Thailand and relatively cheap.
At the same time, the cost of hotel accommodation increased on average to 23,528 baht – 61 thousand rubles, which is 5,067 baht (13 thousand rubles) more than before the pandemic. Moreover, prices for hotels have not increased, it’s just that tourists began to choose more expensive options, the TAT official explained. Against this background, the desire to save on food looks somewhat strange. Whether the trend is relevant for our compatriots in Thai resorts is not specified.
As for the total expenses of foreigners on vacation, tourists from Middle Eastern countries allowed themselves the greatest extravagance – on average 88,512 baht (230 thousand rubles). for the trip. They are followed by guests from the Oceania region – Australia and New Zealand – 64,860 baht (168 thousand rubles), the USA – 60,474 baht (157 thousand rubles), Europe – 59,345 baht (154 thousand rubles). Russians are not mentioned.
